Gunzenhausen is located in the middle of the Franconian Lake District and southeast of the Altmühlsee. The Altmühl flows through the city. In the course of the creation of the Franconian Lake District, the Altmühlsee was dammed north of Gunzenhausen. The municipality of Gunzenhausen is characterized by hills and meadows.
Numerous excavation finds in the area of the city prove the settlement already in prehistoric times. A first documentary mention comes from the year 823. From 1368 onwards the city received the right to hold annual fairs, permission to build extensive fortifications with city walls, towers and moats as well as the large city church. The baroque image of the city was shaped by the absolutist Prince Karl Wilhelm Friedrich of Brandenburg-Ansbach (the "Wild Margrave") in the 18th century. In 1806 Gunzenhausen fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria.
In 1972 the district of Gunzenhausen was merged with the district of Weißenburg as part of the regional reform and Gunzenhausen lost its status as a district town. In the course of the municipal reform (1971 to 1978), a total of 14 previously independent municipalities came to Gunzenhausen.
Today has 1 Gunzenhausen in addition to the core city 14 districts. Some ( * ) of them are in turn divided into further, sometimes very small districts (not mentioned here):
