Dollnstein has a train station on the route MunichIngolstadtTreuchtlingenNuremberg. Regional trains from Munich (travel time 1:35 hours), Ingolstadt (30–35 minutes) and Treuchtlingen (15 minutes) stop every hour. A regional train comes from Nuremberg every two hours (1:10 hours). The closest ICE train station is Ingolstadt, and long-distance trains also stop occasionally in Treuchtlingen.

Dollnstein is on the state roads 2047 and 2230 and between Treuchtlingen, Eichstatt, Weissenburg and Neuburg on the Danube. There is a connection to federal highways 9 km to the northeast, at Eichstätt, to the B13 (Würzburg – Ansbach – Ingolstadt – Munich) and 17 km to the east, at Treuchtlingen, to the B2 (Nuremberg – Augsburg). The Altmühl cycle path leads through Dollnstein. It is 28 km from Treuchtlingen to the north-west, 20 km from Pappenheim, and 16 km from Eichstätt to the south-east.
