According to tradition, Irish wandering monks founded a monastery in 734. The settlement that arose near this monastery was first documented in 1197 as "Amarbach". In 1253 the place received city rights. In 1172 Amorbach came into the possession of the Archbishopric of Mainz.

As a result of the destruction in the Thirty Years' War, a number of buildings in the Baroque style were built in Amorbach, such as the Gangolf Church, the Kurmainzische official seat and the monastery.

The Principality of Leiningen was established in 1803. The people of Leiningen made Amorbach their royal seat. The Kurmainzische official seat became the Fürstlich-Leiningen palace, also monastery and abbey church came into their possession. These ownership structures have been preserved to this day.

Amorbach has been Bavarian since 1816. In 1965 the city became a climatic health resort. The districts of Boxbrunn, Beuchen, Neudorf and Reichartshausen belong to Amorbach.

  • Wildenburg (or Wildenberg Castle) - castle ruins south of Amorbach, where Wolfram von Eschenbach Parts of his Parcivals should have written. The ruins of the castle, which was destroyed in the 15th century, are located about 3 km south of the hamlet of Buch near Kirchzell. A narrow asphalt road branches off from the Wildenburg restaurant and leads to a place at the foot of the castle hill. The ruins can only be reached on foot or on horseback.
  • Gotthard ruins, about 1 km north of Amorbach on a hilltop ruin of a Gothic pillar basilica. From there you have a wonderful view over the valley basin to the Spessart, also known as the 7-valley view.
