Emperor Barbarossa visited the place in 1165. 1237 he was at Kurmainz handed over and shortly thereafter received city rights. Together with the neighboring towns in the Odenwald and on the Main, Bischofsheim formed the until the Peasant Wars Nine Cities Association. With the secularization, the city first came to the principality of Leiningen, a few years later it became Baden. There in this duchy the name Bischofsheim occurs several times, the addition Deaf appended. The residents ignore this in everyday language and still only name the city briefly Bisheme. The city has been a district town since 1938, initially in the district of Tauberbischofsheim, and after the district reform of 1973 in the Main-Tauber district.

In the years 1971–1975 the districts of Hochhausen, Impfingen, Dienstadt, Distelhausen, Dittigheim and Dittwar were incorporated.

Neighboring municipalities are Külsheim, Werbach, Large cattle field, Grünsfeld, Lauda-Koenigshofen and Koenigheim.

outdoor pool

The municipal outdoor pool with a beautiful location on the Tauber attracts numerous visitors every year, who can refresh themselves in the cool water in the summer months or relax on one of the lawns. The solar-heated Frankenbad consists of a non-swimmer area with a large water slide and a 50-meter-long swimmer area with several starting blocks, a one-meter diving platform and a three-meter diving platform. For the little ones, the pool offers an adventure paddling pool with slide and water play options. The children's pool is located in the middle of a manageable sunbathing area with lots of play equipment for swings, turning, sliding and climbing. If bathing and splashing alone is not enough for you, you can let off steam on the beach volleyball court or the basketball hoop on the large lawn or play at the table football or pool table. During the opening hours, visitors to the swimming pool can use the tartan court next to the football stadium with 4 basketball hoops and 2 small-field goals. Balls, diving goggles, etc. can be borrowed at the cash desk. On the sunbathing lawns, visitors can find both sun and shade, depending on their preference. A kiosk with an extensive selection takes care of the physical well-being.[2]

Tent sites

There is a campground in the Dittwar district, which is used nationwide by youth and family camps. The campsite with the pastor Heinrich Weber house is owned by the Catholic parish of Neckarelz / Diedesheim. The 11,600 m² facility is surrounded by forest and has a small sports field, play areas and a campfire site.[3]
