The city of Lauda-Königshofen was created in its current form during the municipal reform around 1975 through the merger of the formerly 12 independent municipalities of Lauda, ​​Königshofen, Beckstein, Deubach, Gerlachsheim, Heckfeld, Marbach, Messelhausen, Oberbalbach, Oberlauda, ​​Sachsenflur and Unterbalbach. The largest district and administrative center is Lauda. The place was founded around 1150 and was under the influence of the Würzburg monastery for several centuries. The city came to Baden in 1806 and is now part of the Main-Tauber district.

Neighboring communities are Tauberbischofsheim, Grünsfeld, Wittighausen, Igersheim, Bad Mergentheim, Boxberg, Maple (bathing) and Koenigheim.
