Wittighausen was created in 1971/1972 through the merger of the formerly independent municipalities of Oberwittighausen, Unterwittighausen, Poppenhausen and Vilchband. The neighboring communities to the west Large cattle field, Grünsfeld and Lauda-Koenigshofen belong to the Main-Tauber-Kreis, the eastern neighbors Kirchheim and Butthard lie in Lower Franconian Würzburg district.
