Niedernberg is a community in Main square. It is located in the Lower Franconian district of Miltenberg directly on Main, around 9 km south of Aschaffenburg between the Odenwald in the east and that Spessart in the West.
background
Although the place name contains the designation "mountain", the area of the district is rather flat and flat. The place name is originally derived from Niderenburc (lower fortified place), which became Niedernberg over the centuries. The part of the name "Nieder" comes from the fact that the area continues downhill from Obernburg lies. Due to the location on the Main, the soil consists of sand in many areas, which has led to massive degradation and thus to a lake landscape in the south of the village. This is partly developed for tourism, but partly also a nature reserve. With an annual mean temperature of over 9 degrees Celsius, Niedernberg is one of the warmest areas in Germany.
The oldest evidence of human life in the Niedernberg area is from the Neolithic period. At the time of the Romans, a Roman fort is occupied with a crew of around 500 men. It is completely built over, but the location of individual streets in the old town corresponds to the paths within the fort. The important finds from this period include a bronze fountain mask and a tombstone of a Roman soldier, which can be seen as replicas in the village. For many centuries, Niedernberg was far away from major trade routes and led a rather modest existence. The place was characterized by home tailoring and agriculture. Only with the connection to the federal highway B469 did a significant upturn take place, which goes hand in hand with the constant expansion of the industrial area and residential area.
language
Due to the peripheral location, the language is both through the Lower Franconian as well as the Hessian dialect. Due to the high proportion of residents who have moved here, the actual dialect is being pushed back more and more. An example of how strongly different local dialects can be identified even on a small scale can be seen from the earlier pronunciation of the auxiliary verb “haben”. This word alone differs greatly in the dialect of the surrounding communities (Niedernberg: hohn, Großwallstadt: hewwe, Großostheim: haoun). Earlier generations in Niedernberg said instead of “I have” accordingly “mockery”, which is why Niedernberg was given the nickname “Honisch” by neighboring communities. Over the years, this name has become a “branded item”, especially used by the people of Niedernberg, especially during the carnival season.

Tourist Attractions
In the old town center there are some half-timbered houses, some of which have been very well restored. Occasionally so-called envious heads can be found on the corners of houses, which were attached to ward off evil spirits. The old town was originally surrounded by a town wall, parts of which have been preserved, as well as a round tower in the northeast. On the Main, parts of the old towpath are still preserved, on which riders with their horses pulled the ships up the Main (towed). The oldest surviving parts of the Catholic 2 Parish Church of St. Cyriakus date from 1461. There are also several wayside shrines and crosses in Niedernberg. Two finds from Roman times (Roman tombstone and bronze head (fountain mask) of a Silenus designed as gargoyles) are exhibited as reproductions. The easiest way to explore all of these things is by taking the village trail on foot:
- 1 Village trail, Hauptstrasse 74, 63843 Niedernberg. A circular village path created in 2007 leads to the sights in the old town center. Information boards are attached to squares, buildings or monuments. The starting point of the approx. 2 km long circular route is the weighing house opposite the village square. Guided tours are also possible on the circular route. The path on the Main is paved with coarse sandstones. You have to find the way yourself using the maps in the lower part of each information board, there are no signposts.
The history fountain, which was set up in 1995, is located on the village square. It contains symbolic representations of important historical periods, which are explained on an information board placed near the fountain. Opposite the village square is the low weighing house. Cattle used to be weighed here. Today a curiosity of the Niedernberg story can be seen in the window. In the case of the mouse plague in 1822, the Niedernbergers used a metal container with a pipe attachment. Burning rags and sulfur were placed in the container. The resulting combustion gases were slid through the pipe into the mouse holes. The device for "eradicating mice" was quickly known as the "Tin Cat". Soon the expression “Blechern Katz” was a general joke name for Niedernberg.

The Fifth Season has a high priority, so that Niedernberg counts as one of the "foolish strongholds" on the Lower Main. Because Niedernberg was away from the main trade routes for many years, the place was originally characterized by smaller clothing manufacturers and part-time farming. With the connection to the federal highway B469, there was a significant economic upswing. In 1970, Wanzke, the first machine factory, was founded in Niedernberg. Companies like G K Umformtechnik and Maschinenbau Schwind followed. ABI, founded in 1974 and one of the market leaders in the field of special civil engineering machines, is one of the largest employers in Niedernberg with around 250 employees in 2018. Another industrial focus was and is in the stone and earth industry. The massive gravel mining in the south of Niedernberg over decades led to an artificial lake landscape which, after the gravel mining was completed, was and will be converted into natural areas, some with tourist use.
There are larger water protection areas in the north and east of the district. This restriction meant that numerous trading companies with wholesale-like activities have settled in the Niedernberg industrial park.
