Old town

Michelstadt has a historic half-timbered old town with numerous buildings worth seeing:

  • Half-timbered town hall - The city's landmark from 1484, the Gothic building with its three turrets, is one of the most beautiful and most important half-timbered buildings in Germany. The superstructure rests on the mighty oak posts and reveals an open ground floor hall. Downstairs was the Cent Court, and upstairs was the seat of the Court of Honor, which was later called the City Council. The administered tithe was stored in the attic as grain.
  • Market fountain - opposite the town hall, it was built in 1575. Its pillar bears the Archangel Michael, who stands on a cube stone and keeps evil from the city with the flaming sword and the balance of the soul.
  • Mother-in-law well - one of the oldest water dispensers in the city, stood as a market fountain on the market square until 1575.
  • Old farm pharmacy - Half-timbered building, built in 1557, the ground floor is made of red sandstone.
  • City Church - Late Gothic town church - choir: 1481, portal: 1490, bell tower: 1507, carillon: 1913/58
