Kelheim is a city in Lower Bavaria. It is located at the mouth of the Altmühl in the Danube.

By plane

The nearest major airports are Munich (90 km) and Nuremberg (110 km northwest). Munich Airport is around one hour away by car and Nuremberg just under 1½ hours away. Unfortunately, there are no quick and easy connections by public transport: from Nuremberg Airport you have to change trains three times and take at least two hours, from Munich Airport even longer.

By train

Kelheim itself does not have a passenger train station. Arrival is possible via the train station Hall (Danube)who is on the railway line regensburgIngolstadt lies. The Agilis from Regensburg (journey time 25 minutes) and Ingolstadt (35 minutes) stops there twice an hour. Five times a day there is a continuous train from Ulm (2: 35–2: 55 hours) via Donauwörth (1½ hours). From the Danube train station in Saal there is a bus to the center of Kelheim, the journey takes about 15 minutes. The closest ICE train stations are Ingolstadt and Regensburg. You have to change trains twice from Munich and need (depending on the connection) 1:40 to over 2 hours, from Nuremberg 1½ – 2 hours.

Coming from the north Highway 93 exit Bad Abbach / Kelheim, then B16 towards Ingolstadt, Kelheim exit, or Autobahn 9 exit Denkendorf, Direction Riedenburg, then in Riedenburg over the canal bridge, right to Kelheim

Coming from the south Highway 93 exit Abensberg / Kelheim, then left, after 200 m right through Ober- / Unterschambach, at the Reissing junction, right towards Kelheim, on federal road 16 to the Kelheim exit.

By boat

Kelheim is on Main-Danube Canal and the Danube.

By bicycle

Kelheim is on Altmühltal cycle path (43 km from Beilngries, 86 km from Eichstätt) and am Danube cycle path (50 km downstream from Ingolstadt, 34 km upstream from Regensburg). Not an officially designated cycle path, but a popular unofficial route is the “Main-Danube Canal Cycle Path”. B. from Nuremberg (103 km) to Kelheim.

  • The various stations of the Altmühltal archaeological park between Kelheim and Dietfurt an der Altmühl can be best explored by bike along the Altmühlradweg. The stations, reconstructions of sites from the Stone Age and Bronze Age or from Celtic settlements are all located directly on the Altmühl. So drivers always have to park in the nearby towns and walk to the river.
  • Travel with the passenger ships through the Danube breakthrough to the Weltenburg Abbey (from Easter to the end of October).

  • From Weltenburg Abbey, Zillen (traditional fishing boats) run from the upstream gravel bank. With them you can cross the Danube, or through it Weltenburger narrow drive, get out and walk back or drive back to the monastery. Costs per person € 4 (as of 2018) one way.
