The town Dietfurt an der Altmühl is lying in Altmuehltal Nature Park in the Upper Palatinate and is known for its unique Chinese carnival.

background

Dietfurt humorously cultivates its reputation as "Bavarian China". Allegedly this goes back to the fact that in the late Middle Ages an episcopal tax collector from Eichstätt reported to the prince-bishop that the Dietfurters had holed up behind their large (city) wall "like the Chinese" in order not to pay taxes. The popular name of the Dietfurters as "Chinese" can only be proven in written sources since 1860. Since 1954 the Chinese carnival has been celebrated in Dietfurt. Accordingly, there is no carnival prince here, but an "emperor", and the motto, costumes and floats are adapted to this theme. This also explains the Chinese fountain in front of the town hall, which was built in 1962.
