Ludwig Canal - Ludwigskanal

Map of Ludwig Canal

The Ludwig Canal (also known as Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal) is a historical canal connection between the Main at Bamberg and the Danube in Kelheim. He overcame the European main watershed with 100 locks Upper Palatinate Jura. The canal is a listed building as a route monument.

background

The canal was built between 1836 and 1846, but soon lost its economic importance due to the emerging railway construction. It was finally abandoned in 1950 and later completed by the 1992 one Main-Danube Canal replaced. The traffic on the Ludwig Canal was mainly carried out by tow barges; the ships were pulled by horses from the towpath on the side (as was largely the case with the French canals) Nuremberg and Beilngries is the over Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate guided canal route largely preserved (the route of the Main-Danube Canal runs much further south here), while the section between Bamberg and Nuremberg from Frankenschnellweg and the new canal built over and the section in Altmuehltal are largely destroyed by the new canal (there are individual locks in the Altmühltal, such as locks 10 and 11 at Riedenburg and locks 12 and 14 at Dietfurt an der Altmühl, preserved as insulated structures). To the north of Nuremberg, only lock 100 in Bamberg is functional, lock 94 in Eggolsheim has fallen dry, but is reasonably well preserved. In some places the canal is still used for excursion boats. Most of the lock gates have been dismantled, and some trough bridges have been preserved Schwarzach bridge canal at Schwarzenbruck and the Gösselthal bridge canal at Beilngries.
