background

Altmühl near Beilngries

The oldest traces of settlement in the Beilngrieser Tal come from the younger Stone Age (around 3500 - 1800 BC). The year of the first documentary mention is 1007, "Bilo" is interpreted as a personal name and "semolina" for river debris. Beilngries has been part of the Eichstätt diocese since 1016 and for over 500 years. In 1053 the place received market rights and in 1485 city rights. An important date in modern times is the opening of the Ludwig Canal under King Ludwig I and then the new one Main-Danube Canal in September 1992: Beilngries lies at the confluence of the Sulz in the Altmuehl, on the old and the new Main-Danube Canal.

Also because of the location in Altmuehltal Nature Park and with almost 1,800 guest beds, tourism is an important economic factor in Beilngries.
