background

The settlement of the Berching area can be traced back to the Neolithic Age. Pirihinga is mentioned for the first time in a document from the year 883. The place quickly came to the bishops of Eichstatt, In 1314 he received city rights. The completely preserved city wall with 13 towers and four city gates was built in the 15th century. In 1806, after a brief interlude with the Electorate of Salzburg, Berching came from the Hochstift Eichstätt to the young Kingdom of Bavaria. The convenient location in the Sulz valley led to the construction of the in the 1830s Ludwig-Main-Danube Canal, which was closed in 1950, in 1888 for the construction of the 1987 disused local railway line from Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate to Beilngries. In 1992 the long controversial one Main-Danube Canal opened, which leads past the old town of Berching to the west. In the 1970s, numerous previously independent communities were incorporated, including Plankstetten with its old Bendiktinerkloster.Berching belonged to Middle Franconia until 1880 and then became part of the district office Beilngries in the Upper Palatinate. With the dissolution of the district of Beilngries it came to the district of Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate, while Beilngries Oberbayern was slammed. Berching lies at the intersection of the districts of Middle Franconia, Upper Palatinate and Upper Bavaria.
