background

Hilpoltstein was a district town in Middle Franconia until 1972. The district was dissolved that year and largely merged with the former Schwabach district to form the new Roth district. The small town, located around 30 km from Nuremberg, was founded by the Lords of Stein in the 12th century near the castle, which has been in existence since the 10th century, the name goes back to Hilpolt I of this family. The Main-Danube Canal, the Bundesautobahn 9 and the ICE route Nuremberg-Ingolstadt-Munich run through the city.

Hilpoltstein Castle

In the 14th century Hilpoltstein came to the Duchy of Bavaria-Ingolstadt, in 1505 to the "young" Palatinate (Pfalz-Neuburg), but was temporarily pledged to the imperial city of Nuremberg. In 1606, the widow of Count Palatine Ottheinrich II, Dorothea Maria, moved into the renovated castle as an "illustrious Countess Palatine", which fell into disrepair after her death. In 1799 Hilpoltstein came to the Electorate of Baiern. In 1862 the city became the capital of an Upper Palatinate district office, which became part of Middle Franconia in 1880. In 1972 47 villages and hamlets were incorporated. The city has a strange layout: the streets are in the shape of a half star from the eccentrically situated market square (Dehio Franken).
