The highest part of the Westerwald is the High Westerwald, right on the border triangle of Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate, the highest point of which is the 657 meter high Fuchskaute. Other mountain ranges are the Oberwesterwald, Niederwesterwald and Montabauer Westerwald. In the center of the region lies the Westerwald Lake District. In tourist contexts, the region is also used in northern and southern Westerwald divided (the division runs roughly along the line Linz–Puderbach–Westerburg).
On the edges of the Westerwald lie the Siegtal (north), Middle Rhine Valley (West), Lahn valley (South; border to Taunus) and Dilltal (east; border to Gladenbacher Bergland). The northwestern foothills of the Westerwald form that Siebengebirge.
