background

The mountains are of volcanic origin.

Until 2009 there were plans to set up a national park in the Siebengebirge. However, since a negative referendum in Bad Honnef, the project has not been pursued any further.

About the name: the popular opinion that the Siebengebirge got its name from the seven "great mountains" of the mountains is not entirely correct. On the one hand, depending on which hill you count, there are more or less than seven mountains, seven is more of a "nice" number. On the other hand, the name could also have originated from the Ripuarian word Siefen (moist mountain valley), which denotes a moist brook valley, or from boiling, because of the soap makers who used to work in the valleys.

The seven "great mountains" of the Siebengebirge: This term is used to describe the most famous, but not the highest mountains in the range:

  • Great Mount of Olives (460.1 m) with summit gastronomy and a great view
  • Löwenburg (455.0 m) with the castle ruins of the same name and the "Three Lakes View".
  • Lohrberg (432.4 m) - The Lohrberg is largely uninteresting for tourists because it has no outstanding sights or views. There is also a "three-lake view" on its western slope.
  • Nonnenstromberg (335.3 m)
  • Petersberg (331.1 m) with the guest house of the Federal Republic of Germany
  • Wolkenburg (324.0 m) - rock (Lalit) used to be mined here. As early as 1740 a tower collapsed during quarry work. By 1900 the summit disappeared together with the castle, the mountain is approx. 35 m lower today.
  • Drachenfels (320.7 m) - the most famous mountain in the mountains with a panoramic view of the Rhine Valley and summit gastronomy.
