background

City ensemble with town hall in the Weser Renaissance style

The clergyman Lull, a companion of Boniface, built a Benedictine monastery here in 796, from which the missionary work of the Saxons was to take place. In 775, the Frankish king Karl elevated the monastery to an imperial abbey. It existed for 837 years. The mighty ruins of the early Romanesque basilica still bear witness to the time of the monastery’s prosperity. The basilica was 102.80 m in length and 56.50 m in the transept. At times the abbey was the foster home of medieval culture. The monk Lambert, one of the most important historians of the Middle Ages, lived here. A market settlement developed around the monastery early on, which was first mentioned as a town in 1170. During the Reformation, the Hersfeld region became Protestant and the abbey's chances of survival decreased. During the Peasants' War, a peasant army occupied the city and plundered the monastery. In 1606, the Landgrave of Hesse took over the grounds and buildings of the imperial abbey after the last abbot had died. During the Seven Years' War (1756 - 1763) a major fire destroyed the entire monastery complex. For two hundred years there was an economic standstill in Bad Hersfeld. It was not until the 19th century that a considerable cloth industry and other branches of industry developed. Before the First World War, the city had over 10,000 inhabitants. Konrad Duden was the head of the royal Prussian grammar school at the turn of the century. In 1904 the Hersfeld spa was created by drilling a healing spring. Since 1949 the city has been called "Bad Hersfeld". It became the Hessisches Staatsbad in 1963, after having been in the center of the German Empire for centuries. Due to the division of Germany after World War II, the city came to the eastern edge of the Federal Republic. Transport and economic connections to the east dwindled or no longer existed. The important cloth industry got into trouble. New industries were established. Konrad Zuse, who built the first programmable computer, ran the main factory of Zuse KG in Wehneberger Straße in Bad Hersfeld from 1957. Zuse had started production in Neukirchen (Hünfeld) in 1949. Siemens later took over Zuse KG. Zuse was also a well-known painter. Since the reunification of Germany in 1989, Bad Hersfeld has been located in the middle of Germany again. The favorable location has persuaded the online booksellers Amazon and Libri to set up logistics centers here.
