Fir is a historic city in the HessianRhön.

background

The tranquil town of Tann an der Ulster was the seat of the Lords of Tann in the Middle Ages, which is still evident today in the well-preserved castle and town fortifications. Since the gentlemen von der Tann were close friends with Martin Luther, Tann is today an evangelical exclave in the otherwise deeply Catholic Rhön. A city fire in 1879 destroyed most of the half-timbered buildings in the medieval old town, but some buildings are still preserved.

After the Second World War, Tann suddenly found itself in an extreme peripheral location, surrounded on three sides by the Iron Curtain, but benefited economically from the Federal German zone border promotion and border tourism. After the reunification, Tann fell into a deep slumber, but still offers a good tourist infrastructure embedded in the untouched nature of the Rhön.
