Tourist Attractions

Wendelstein Castle and city wall

In Vacha, Wendelstein Castle with a tower from the 12th century is particularly interesting. It includes a museum:

City Church

There is also a lot to see in the city itself. That would be mentioned there City fortifications, of which much has been preserved and in which Wendelstein Castle is integrated as well as the Werra Bridge with fourteen arches (after 1342). Some half-timbered houses have been preserved, including the town hall in the Hessian Renaissance style from 1613/14. The City Church has a classical nave (1821-1824) and a Romanesque tower with a Gothic elevation (12th / 13th century); the tower portal is from around 1200.

This can be found on the northern side of the Werra (opposite the city) House Hoßfeld. It has a special feature because the western part of the building belongs to Hesse, while the eastern part belongs to Thuringia. Accordingly, the former western border of the GDR ran right through the house. After 1952 the connecting door was walled up; It was not until January 1, 1976 that an agreement was reached to move the border behind the house so that the eastern half was again accessible to the owner.
