The Hessian long-distance cycle route R7 is an east-west connection in Central Hesse. It begins at the Werra and ends at the Lahn. There is also a section in the Fulda valley.

Route profile

  • Length: 242 km (30 km for the alternative route R7a)
  • Signposting: good norm-compliant standard of the Hessian long-distance cycle routes
  • Slopes: the route has some hills and also longer climbs
  • Path condition:: 88% asphalt is a lot for such a long journey.
  • Traffic load:: Partly country road, partly next to B62. From Weilburg away from the streets in an idyllic location.

Vacha - Bad Hersfeld: approx. 31 km

Friedewald moated castle ruins
  • Vacha - is still in Thuringia. The tour begins at the historic stone bridge.
  • Heimboldshausen - over the Werra and into the mountains next to the B62.
→ Connection to the Solztalradweg, which also leads to Bad Hersfeld. The route is longer, but flatter than the R7.
  • Friedewald - "Mountain station" with castle and moated castle ruins. Further through the forest to the beautiful Solztalradwegwhich leads us almost to the train station in Hersfeld.
→ Instead of turning left into the forest before the Fulda bridge, you can continue to follow the R1 and pass Hersfeld on a flatter, but not always more beautiful route (B27!) The R1 meets the R7 again before Fuldapark.

Bad Hersfeld - Lauterbach: approx. 46 km

  • Bad Hersfeld - Between Bad Hersfeld and Niederaula you pass the test fields of the state laboratory. The route is here with that Fulda cycle path identical.
  • Niederaula - Past the logistics center. You can see many containers from the bike path.
  • Niederjossa - This is where the R7a begins, which is the place slot and the Volcano bike path in the route. It runs away from the main roads largely on railway cycle paths. If you want to get to know both variants, you can start on a circular route.

Lauterbach - Gießen: approx. 71 km

  • Lauterbach (Hesse) - The Rascal (Photo) is in the Lauter and can be seen from the bike path. To get to the statue you have to go over the Step stones go, which are also at this point. After the end of the R7a, the R7 now also runs a little on the Volcano bike path.

Giessen - Weilburg: approx. 52 km

  • Wetzlar - historic half-timbered old town with cathedral
Federal highway 49 has been expanded to four lanes since spring 2009. The Lahntal cycle path has been rerouted. The section is exposed to traffic noise as far as Löhnberg. Recommendation: use the train to Löhnberg.
Braunfels beautiful half-timbered town 5 km away from the Lahn.
  • Löhnberg - From here the Lahn becomes a natural experience, away from the B49 expressway. However, the cycle path leads a short distance on the road before Weilburg, unless you continue down the towpath.

  • Weilburg · 137m - castle with castle garden, ship tunnel
    Over the stone bridge, then straight ahead into "Niedergasse" and "Über dem Hainberg" to the town hall. Stand on the parking deck free bike boxes. The "Neugasse" leads to the Schlossplatz and the market square.
    Back from the castle it goes over the street "Behind the town hall" to the Lahn to the remarkable exit of the ship tunnel with the double lock.

Weilburg - Diez: approx. 44 km
