Fulda cycle route - Fulda-Radweg

The approximately 200 km long Fulda cycle path leads from the southern part of the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön along the river valley to Hann. Münden. On this route you get to know the cozy Hesse. Romantic half-timbered towns like slot, Rotenburg on the Fulda and Melsungen invite you to a "bike stop". On the other hand, things are busy at the old bishopric Fulda and in the North Hessian "Documenta City" kassel to.

The Hess. Long-distance cycle path R1, recently the FULDA cycle path R1, begins in the main variant in Franconia Bad Neustadt at the Saale. There it runs along the Brend Bischofsheim on the Rhön. The R1a variant begins at the Ulster spring, where the Ulstertal cycle path begins north to the Werra. In Gersfeld it meets the main path R1. North of Kassel in Hann. Münden the Fulda unites with the Werra to form the Weser. The R1 continues along the Weser up to Bad Karlshafen and is then about 260 km long. Incidentally, the route is part of D-Route 9 for almost the entire length of the route.

Incidentally, the Fulda Cycle Path has had one since May 2009 Attraction: TheBicycle ropeway between Binsförth and Beiseförth.

Route profile

Bicycle routes along the Fulda
  • Length: about 205 - 278 km
- Hess. Long-distance cycle route R1: 257 km (Bischofsheim - Bad Karlshafen)
- Along the Fulda: around 205 km (Wasserkuppe - Hann. Münden)
  • Signposting: good norm-compliant standard of the Hessian long-distance cycle routes
  • Slopes: Even if the route is a river bike path, the route is a bit hilly in parts. Only the section from Kassel to Hann is actually correct. Münden, whereby Hutzdorf - Bad Hersfeld also has very low sporting demands.
  • Path condition: well developed; Over 85% of the route is paved or concreted; the rest are mostly good drivable gravel roads. The route between Kassel-Wolfsanger and Hann Münden has been completely paved since October 2016.
  • Traffic load: largely free of traffic; z. Local roads with little to moderate traffic are sometimes used.
  • Suitable bike: The best touring bike with mountain gears (at least 7 gear hub gears), as there are already some challenging hills.
  • Family suitability: consistently not for families with smaller children suitable. The most family-friendly sections are the largely traffic-free routes Gersfeld to Fulda, Kassel to Hann. Münden and Rotenburg to Morschen, especially if you stay west of the railway line (alternative route). The beautiful and quiet route Guxhagen - Dennhausen is also highly recommended.
However, the route is continuous with children from around 10 years of age who can safely master the bike from Gersfeld easy to drive on (on the local roads it is best to have one parent in front). Interesting for families is z. B. especially the cable car at Beiseförth.
  • Inline suitability: given on shorter sections, but not consistently. With the expansion near Kassel-Wolfsanger, the approximately 25 km long route from KS-Wesertor to Hann-Münden-Neumünden can be covered on inline skates.

Everything you need to know about the river can be found in the Wikipedia article Fuldacan be read. The origin of the name "Fulda" is still unclear.

getting there

By train

Supraregional railway junctions on the Fulda cycle path are Fulda, kassel and Bebra.

Almost the entire Fulda valley will be off Gersfeld accompanied by the train. The only exception is the Fulda - Bad Hersfeld section. All larger towns have a regional train stop.

Bicycle buses

By bicycle

In the street

Arriving by car is not so practical as the Fulda cycle path is not a circular tour. However, since the valley is almost completely accessible by train, you can easily get back to the location of your own car.

~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> North of Eichezell you pass the one on the left 14 Propstei Johannesberg (Info Wikipedia). From here the cycle path runs in the rather extensive river valley to the center of Fulda.
  • Fulda: Junction R 3 on Wiesenmühlenstraße - End of stage. From here it is only around 500 m to the cathedral and the city center Fulda there are also a few things to see in the baroque old town. It should be noted that the cycle path network in the city itself can still be expanded; Cyclists in the city of Fulda must therefore be roadworthy. In addition, cobblestones are used in the old town, which impairs driving comfort.

Fulda - Bad Hersfeld: about 50 km

The route to the festival town of Bad Hersfeld is a scenic stage through a quiet, rural Fulda valley.

Idyllic: the Fulda cycle path north of Schlitz (between Unterschwarz and Rimbach)
Wooden bridge near Fraurombach

1 Fulda: Junction R 3 on Wiesenmühlenstraße - Stage start.

~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> In the city of Fulda, the cycle path initially runs through the park in the Fulda river valley; then the northern districts of Glaszell, Kämmerzell and Lüdermünd are reached.
In one particularly scenic part of the Fulda valley, the route reaches the urban area slot - but not the place! However, there are some hills to overcome. There is neither train nor main road between Fulda and Hutzdorf, so it is very quiet. The bike path reaches the nice half-timbered village Pfordt (First mentioned in a document under "Porta" in 852).
The route then runs through a forest. If you see a wooden bridge (photo) on the right, you can go there Fraurombach turn.
  • 2 Fuldabrücke Fraurombach junction - Fraurombach disposes of the Pletschmühle courtyard café about a well-known garden restaurant.
→ The cycle path to Fraurombach signposted here leads alternatively to Hünfeld or Burghaun.
Haunetal detour or Fulda-Haune round trip: You can reach the in Burghaun or Hünfeld Haunetal cycle path, which you can follow to Bad Hersfeld. There you meet the R1 again. If you cycle up the river again, you get to the starting point at Schlitz. You can also do that between Hünfeld and Burghaun Skittles bike path drive, whereby the Haunetal cycle path in Burghaun runs significantly (200m?) lower (connections between the cycle routes are signposted). The Haunetal cycle path is only partially paved.
The new Fulda cycle path

The new traffic-free route near Niederaula.

3 Junction Old Town Schlitz - this is where it begins Volcano bike path, which leads in large parts as an attractive railway cycle path to the Wetterau north of Frankfurt. The connection is also called Hess. Signposted long-distance cycle route R7a. As the historical center of the Castle and half-timbered town slot is not directly on the Fulda cycle path, it is worthwhile to cover 2.5 km of the route along the Schlitz tributary.

~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> The Fulda cycle path continues on traffic-free paths to Unterschwarz. In Unterschwarz turn left over the Fulda bridge towards Ober-Wegfurth, immediately afterwards turn right onto the old railway line towards Bad Hersfeld, which has been expanded into a cycle path.

4 Niederjossa: junction R 7 - Direction Lauterbach (Hesse) on the Vogelsberg.

~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> along the main road through the industrial area. In the industrial area, however, the route soon swings away from the traffic noise in the direction of Fulda.
  • 5 Branch regional route R 11 to D 4 / Rotkäppchenradweg In the industrial area between Niederjossa and Niederaula, the route branches off towards the Knüllgebirge.
  • 6 Niederaula: branch with D 4 / Rotkäppchenradweg - If you come from the west via the Rotkäppchenradweg, you will reach Bad Hersfeld on the Fulda-Radweg.
~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> The route in the wide valley of Niederaula to Asbach has been running on a new path since August 2011, alternating left and right of the railway line, which is only used as a freight connection. Here, agricultural roads were paved or concreted at great expense. This means that one of the biggest problem areas of the R 1 on the country roads in this valley section is a thing of the past. The new route is within earshot of the main road, but the traffic noise is limited, as the distance to the B 62 is 80 to 100 m.
On the new path between Niederaula and Asbach there are also two rest areas with bench-table combinations: The first, particularly recommended, under a beautiful old oak tree 7 and the second 1.5 km before Kohlhausen 8 .
Eichhof Castle in front of Bad Hersfeld
~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> From Kohlhausen The remaining 6-7 km are then mostly directly in the area of the Fulda on concrete farm roads to Bad Hersfeld. On the way you can take a look at the sights worth seeing Half-timbered courtyard of Eichhof Palace throw. Now it is only 3 km to Bad Hersfeld. The route has been leading directly along the Fulda for a long time. After crossing under the A 4 and B 62, you reach the southern outskirts of Bad Hersfeld.
  • 10 Bad Hersfeld - there is one right at the junction public restroom. Both the beautifully designed spa park, but also the city center with the ruins of the collegiate church and the town hall are worth a visit. Both destinations invite you to explore after moving to the neighborhood. If you fancy a walk, you can climb the Robert-Heil-Turm on the Tagberg (beautiful city view).

  • 11 Bad Hersfeld Frankfurter Strasse - End of the stage. Who to railway station would like to, cross Frankfurter Strasse at the pedestrian lights and keep left on Landecker Strasse. After almost 1000 m this leads through the industrial area to the east side of the train station.

Bad Hersfeld - Melsungen: about 55 km

This stage leads along the middle Fulda. There is a lot of half-timbering to discover here.

On the left side you branch off from the railway line into a wooded nature reserve. This is followed by a fairly short section on a side road Peaceless. In Mecklar, the route recently started on a country road via Meckbach and no longer along the B27.
  • From Breitenbach there is a connection to off the route Bebra - If you are looking for a train stop, you will find it here at Bebra train station, which offers a good train connection, especially in local transport. The city center of Bebra with the train station is not directly on the R1. However, Bebra's heyday as a railway town and an important railway hub in long-distance transport is long gone. The train station, which looks much too big today, is in urgent need of renovation. As of 04-2012, the station does not even have elevators or ramps. As of 01-2014, the station is being renovated to be barrier-free.
~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> From Breitenbach the route does not lead via Bebra, but directly further left along the Fulda. You drive through a partly densely wooded, scenic Section to Rotenburg. On the way you can find another on the south bank of the "Forbachsee" (NSG) covered bird watching stand with lake view.
  • Rotenburg on the Fulda invites with his Half-timbered old town for a break and, depending on the stage planning, of course also for an overnight stay.
~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> From Rotenburg the route leads on asphalt farm roads away from motor vehicle traffic scenic along the river. The village of Brach is left behind.
  • Baumbach - Important note: The Baumbach train station exists no more.
~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> East of Baumbach river crossing on the cycle path on the district road. At the sports field, however, you immediately turn left again away from the traffic into the wide fields.
  • NSG gravel pit northeast of Baumbach - The former gravel pit has long been renatured and is now a valuable biotope for birds. You can find it directly at R 1 at 1 here a covered observation pulpit (also offers good protection from a rain shower).
~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> Continue cycling through the fields towards Heinebach. There is another train stop in the area of the route ("Alheim-Heinebach"; accessible from Verzweig R 1 / Kreisstraße via Bahnhofstraße after around 200 m).
  • In Rotten (Train stop "Morschen-Altmorschen" in the village near the R 1) is a stop at Haydau Monastery where the R 1 leads directly past it in the locality.
~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> Directly behind the road bridge over the Fulda, which connects Altmorschen and Neumorschen, it is worth leaving the R 1 to the right. With the local cycle route sign R 18 you can surround Neumorschen away from the car traffic on well-drivable asphalt paths (only a small detour). After about 1 km, the local R 18 returns to the Fulda cycle path. Here the dominates now imposing railway bridge the high-speed line Fulda-Kassel the valley. After the bridge, you have to use the more heavily used local connecting road to Binsförth for around 1 km.
The new one between Binsförth and Beiseförth has been available since 2009 Bicycle ropeway use, or continue on the road with the larger hill.
~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> At Malsfeld, a short piece of bike path towards Melsungen has been rebuilt. There the disused route of the "Kanonenbahn" crosses the Fulda valley.
→ Detour before Melsungen: branching off from the B83, the Chattengau-Fulda cycle route R12 to Spangenberg (about 8 km one way).
The passage of the historical half-timbered townMelsungen meanwhile follows the Fulda course away from the B83.
  • Stage town of Melsungen - Even if you don't stay here, you should at least take a closer look at the half-timbered old town between Bartenwetzerbrücke and the market square. Gastronomy invites you to stop in the pedestrian zone. The landmark of Melsungen is the half-timbered town hall, which can of course be found on the market square. Connection to the onward journey is also offered by the Chattengau-Fulda-Weg R12.
- Bicycle parking and toilet in Melsungen: In the northern part of the "Am Sand" visitor car park at 1 there are bicycle boxes for vandalism and theft-proof storage of bicycles with luggage. From here it is only a few steps to the Bartenwetzerbrücke and the market square with the town hall. Parking fee: 50 cents for 24 hours, which must be paid at the parking ticket machine. The parking ticket is then deposited from the inside in a window on the box as a receipt (07-2010). There is also one at the parking lot public toilet. Another toilet is on the north side of the town hall.

Bicycle ropeway

The bicycle cable car
General view of the facility in Beiseförth

Unique in Germany: the new cable car between Binsförth and Beiseförth

The unusual means of transport across the Fulda has been in operation since May 21, 2009. The cable ferry opens up a new, very scenic section of the R1 in the Fulda loop between Binsförth and Beiseförth. The very dangerous road between Binsförth and Beiseförth on the western Fuldaufer can be bypassed with the 50 m long, muscle-powered "bicycle cable car". There is also a steep hilltop in the street that no longer has to be conquered. The new attraction 2 Bicycle ropeway) was built to replace a planned bicycle bridge over the Fulda, which would have cost significantly more (€ 750,000). A cycle path on the main road on the eastern bank would have been significantly more expensive than the cable car. The system cost the neighboring communities of Morschen and Malsfeld a total of 134,000 euros. [1] The State of Hesse took over 70% of the costs as a grant.

By the way, the official name of the railway is "Seilfähre". In the media and among cyclists, however, the name "bicycle cable car" has established itself. The system is also under this term in Wikipedia described.

Operating instructions of the railway (can be read in the maximum image enlargement)

Function and operation: The gondola of the freely accessible self-service lift can accommodate 4 people each with a bicycle. The transport basket has a mechanical overload protection device that blocks the track when it is loaded with more than 400 kg. An emergency call alarm is also installed in the nacelle, which can be used to alert a service point that is manned around the clock. A mobile phone number that can be called in an emergency is also given. The journey across the Fulda at a height of 1.5 to 2 m takes about 5 minutes, during which the gondola has to be moved forward by two passengers using a crank. According to Christian Schäffer from the engineering office Intium, the record is 3 minutes (but then the shoulders hurt)[2]. However, if you are unlucky, you first have to pull the empty gondola over from the other bank with the crank handle (then you need more than 5 minutes for the passage).

Greater use of force is required for the passage itself. This is especially true if you are doing the crossing as an individual. According to a press release from NordHessen Touristik, a pressure of around 15 kg must be exerted on the hand cranks.[3] When the gondola is full, cranking is quite tedious. In 2009, some problems caused the couplings of the two drive cranks in the nacelle. The cranks had to be pulled towards the body for them to click into place. Cranking and pulling towards the body at the same time was not exactly ergonomic. When turning, the crank disengaged itself several times and you turned into space. Then you had to re-engage the crank. In 2010 were at the web new cranks in the form of flywheels Installed. It is not known whether this has solved the problems outlined above. However, you crank yourself "almost to death" on the new wheels. A gear shift is missing.

Otherwise it is very easy to crank at the beginning of the passage, as the rope's carrying rope sags a little. To do this, you have to go uphill a little more on the other bank. By the way, experiences of users of the railway can also be found here on the discussion page.

The cable car was planned and built by the Intium engineering office in Melsungen together with cable car specialists from Austria (the company Reisch) as well as the company Metallbau-Schmidt from Malsfeld.

Operating times: The cable car can be used from April 1st to November 1st during the day be used. Use is not permitted during thunderstorms, storms, heavy fog and flooding. Boats on the Fulda have right of way. On the opposite bank you can see a sign with a horizontal bar. If the bar is in the water, the track may not be used due to flooding. If the other bank cannot be seen in very heavy fog, there is also a ban on use.

If the weather is nice for excursions on the weekend, there can be longer waiting times at the facility. If you are in a hurry, you can of course continue to use the road. If you come from Binsförth, you can easily switch to the street in the event of waiting times or high water and thus bypass the system. If you come from Beiseförth, you have to drive back about 1.3 km if the system is out of order during high water.

Melsungen - kassel: about 40 km

Stage start Melsungen Bartenwetzer Bridge. The bronze figure on the right is one of the two Bartenwetzer statues that can be found on the sandstone arch bridge built in 1595/96 in just 1 1/4 years. In the Middle Ages, many Melsung people made their living from logging. The lumberjacks sharpened their "beards" (Middle High German term for ax or hatchet) when going to work on the bridge in the morning. The notches of this activity can still be seen today in the soft sandstone of the bridge. The historical Fulda bridge in Melsungen is now appropriately called "Bartenwetzerbrücke". The term "Bartwetzer" is still used today as a nickname for the inhabitants of the city of Melsungen. Incidentally, a symbol of the Bartenwetzer also appears up in the Melsung town hall every day at 12 noon and 6 p.m.
Built with a lot of love: the "Speckenplatz" rest area near Büchenwerra

Between Guntershausen and Dittershausen-Dennhausen: beautiful riverside path in the rebound slope largely away from the traffic noise.
Karlsaue: Summer at the orangery
The Fulda near Kassel: View from the wire bridge; back left the roundabout with beer garden.

The Melsungen - Kassel route can easily be covered in half a day. So you can easily get to Hann. Drive through Münden. Otherwise there is still time to visit Kassel in the afternoon. However, if you want to really get to know Kassel, you should spend at least one day's stay. Load in Kassel Karlsaue, Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe and the Museum landscape to visit.

The surface of the route itself is completely covered with road-bike-friendly pavement (90% asphalt). However, the paths are not always free of traffic. However, motor vehicle traffic is very limited on these sections.

In "bad weather" you can change to the nearby train without any problems (5 train stops close to the route: Röhrenfurth, Körle, Guxhagen; Gunterhausen and Rengershausen). The Kassel-Melsungen regiotram line and the Cantus line Kassel-Fulda (where the Cantus does not always stop at all smaller train stations). However, it is possible to take bicycles with you free of charge on both lines.

  • 2 Melsungen Bartenwetzer Bridge - Stage start.
~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> The center of Melsungen is left on the bike path along the B 83. A sign announces 37 km to Kassel from here. As far as Röhrenfurth, the Fulda cycle path accompanies the heavily traveled federal road. In Röhrenfurth there is a rail connection to the Regiotram off the route.
After crossing under the Fulda bridge of the B 83 3 (Caution: unreasonable curve at the bridge) in Röhrenfurth, however, the traffic noise subsides. Now it's off the main road on the little-traveled district road to the hamlet of Loshausen, which is already at the level of Körle (around 3.5 km of road without a cycle path).
  • 4 Fulda Bridge in Loshausen Grains - To the train station Körle turn right over the bridge (located off the route)
~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> From Loshausen, the route becomes traffic-free again for 2 km on an asphalt farm road to Wagenfurth. in the Half-timbered village Wagenfurth invites a neat little one Half-timbered church to stop 5 . Depending on the type of building that is used as a foundation, this is the smallest church in Hesse (background more here). If you want, you can pick up the keys in the village and also visit the inside of the small church (information about this is "posted" on the church door).
Before the Fulda loop near Guxhagen, the route once again contains a really "sporty" hill (around 10% with around 40 meters of altitude). This is on the following 2 km long county road between Wagenfurt and Grebenau 6 to find.
~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> Behind Grebenau there is a beautiful landscape on traffic-free asphalt paths in the Bulla bow Büchenwerra. The cycle path crosses the river on a filigree steel girder bridge. In Büchenwerra there are excursion restaurants and a campsite. You can also find it here in the area of the road bridge 7 the nicely tended rest area "Speckenplatz" (with shelter and benches; see for detailed information here in the HNA Regiowiki).
Guxhagen is now reached traffic-free on asphalt.
  • 8 Guxhagen - If you want, you can take a detour to the other side of the river via the Fulda bridge former monastery Guxhagen do. Here she remembers Breitenau memorial with an exhibition on the Nazi era when a concentration camp was housed in the monastery. There is also a rail connection to the trains to Kassel in the village.
Abbreviation Fuldschleife Büchenwerrea? The Fulda loop south of Guxhagen can be used by cyclists in a hurry Grebenau abbreviated via the B 83. However, this is one steep hill (approx. 10%). This must be on a 1 - 1.5 km long, very busy road be conquered. Attention: The motorway slip road, which is also used very often by trucks, has it no bike path. There is also only a very narrow path (about 60-70 cm wide) for pedestrians. This runs wedged between the guardrail and the railing of the retaining wall on the valley side. Pushing a wheel is here not possible.
~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> North of Guxhagen, the R 1 becomes one more after crossing under the A 7 motorway really attractive river bike path. The route is almost completely free of traffic as far as Kassel, is well paved and often runs close to the river without traffic noise. There are also various bridges to cross over and under. In Guntershausen, the Fulda has already become a remarkable river, since the Eder and Fulda have united here. Incidentally, the Eder brings more Water with than the Fulda. Nevertheless, the Eder flows into the Fulda and not the other way around. The Estuary (9 ) but lies off the R 1 in the fields on the left. If you want to make a detour there, you can do so from the Guntershausen railway bridge over the new section of the Eder cycle path do (about 1.5 km easy).
  • 10 Fulda bridges in Gunterhausen - After the Fulda bridge in Gunterhausen there is in the area of worth seeing railway bridge a small rest area (unfortunately without a refuge, but a picture of the historical railway bridge). The large bridge structure was completed in 1848 as a sandstone arch bridge. On March 31, 1945, towards the end of the war, the Wehrmacht blew up the middle section of the building to secure their route of retreat. In 1952 the concrete arch, which is still standing today, was built. The bridge over which the R 1 runs was built in 1925 so that the Guntershausen farmers could finally reach their fields with dry feet. Before this was only possible via a river ford.
~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> A little bit down fulda can be found at 11 a beautifully situated one Rest area - "Alex Ruh" (also without refuge)
At Dittershausen-Dennhausen the route crosses the Fulda twice again, so that you always stay in close contact with the river: (12 Fulda Bridge in Dittershausen (with the option of boarding the Regiotram at Rengershausen station, which is steeply uphill) and the more heavily trafficked 13 Fulda Bridge Dennhausen. By the way, in the Dittershausen-Dennhausen area you can walk around the main street shorten a kilometer. But the path near the river is more beautiful. Here you also come to one Beer garden past.
The 14 Fuldabrücke Bergshausen before Fuldabrück is a curiosity. Although designed as a self-supporting concrete bridge, the mighty pedestrian and bicycle bridge was given a wooden roof that is otherwise only known from timber truss bridges from the Alpine region. But the imposing one is even bigger Steel truss bridge on the A 44 motorway, die man bald darauf unterfährt.

In Fuldatal-Knickhagen zweigt der Märchenland-Radrundweg to Immenhausen, Grebenstein and Hofgeismar from.

→ Hier beginnen/enden der Werratal cycle path and the Weser-Harz-Heide-Radfernweg.

Münden and Bad Karlshafen landschaftlich attraktiver ist.

~ Bicycle symbol 01 KMJ.png ~> Hann.

Radfernweg R2 Richtung Vogelsberg from.
