background

Bischofsheim (dialect: "Böscheme") was first mentioned in the 13th century as "castrum and oppidum".

South view

Since the Bavarian territorial reform from 1971 to 1980, the localities of Frankenheim, Haselbach, Oberweißbrunn, Unterweißbrunn, Wegfurt and the hamlet of Kreuzberg have been districts of Bischofsheim.

The community of Bischofsheim is a member of the Kreuzberg Alliance, one in 2010 from different am Kreuzberg local communities and institutions founded association with the aim of jointly developing living, working and recreational areas in the region.

Neighboring communities in Bavaria are Oberelsbach, Schönau an der Brend, Sandberg and Wild spots, Neighboring municipality in Hesse is Gersfeld.

Maumer

The nickname of the Bischofsheimer is Maumer, one interpretation is the derivation of Mummenschanz: According to old tradition, the young people of Bischofsheim walk through the streets in the carnival season wearing women's clothes and carved wooden witch masks. The battle cry of the "Böschemer Maumer" is "Haalex", Probably derived from" Eel Hex "for old witch.

The Bischofsheimer Altweiberfasching as a street carnival includes all four Thursdays before Maundy Thursday, it is one of the biggest tourist attractions in town. The start is always in the late afternoon, and all the bars and pubs in town are then overcrowded by the locals and guests in the evening. The highlight of the carnival is Rose Monday with the parade and street carnival on the market square.

The traditional carved wooden masks in the Rhön are considered to be the northernmost German occurrence, the custom is otherwise only found in the old Bavarian Alpine region and in the Alemannic region on Lake Constance and in the Black Forest. The Rhön mask custom has its origins in carving as a sideline for the poor rural population. It has been definitely documented since the middle of the 19th century, and it probably began in the neighboring one Oberelsbach, also a Rhön carnival stronghold. At that time the place was also a regional center of the March Revolution of 1848, behind the wooden masks the dissatisfied citizens could protest about lack of freedom and the press censorship without being recognized.
