background

The year of the first documentary mention is 812, the authoritative document is the Codex Eberhardi.

Oberelsbach seen from the Gangolfsberg

Another historical date is the year 1848, when even the pastor was driven out of the village after an uprising by the revolutionary March Association and he was billeted in punishment. Local fires were recorded for the years 1887, 1891, 1895, 1896 and 1909.

Since the Bavarian regional reform from 1971 to 1980, the localities of Ginolfs, Sondernau, Unterelsbach and Weisbach have been districts of Oberelsbach.

The municipality of Oberelsbach is a member of the Kreuzberg Alliance, one in 2010 from different am Kreuzberg local communities and institutions jointly founded association with the aim of jointly developing living, working and recreational areas in the region.

Well-known personalities from Oberelsbach are Valentin Rathgeber (April 3, 1682 in Oberelsbach, † June 2, 1750 in Banz Monastery), a monastery composer and the most important and best-known Baroque composer from Main Franconia, and Wilhelm Vorndran (* 1924 in the Oberelsbach district of Sondernau). From 1990 to 1994 he was President of the Bavarian State Parliament.

Neighboring communities in Bavaria are houses, Ostheim before the Rhön, Bastheim, Schönau an der Brend, Bischofsheim on the Rhön and in Hesse the place Ehrenberg (Rhön);

Carnival

Oberelsbach and its surroundings in the Elstal are regional carnival strongholds, each with their own traditional carnival costumes, which differ from place to place "Fosenöchder" in street carnival.

The Oberelsbach carnival figures are those Straw men they wear a blue suit that is thickly stuffed with straw. A broad black mustache goes with the carved wooden mask and a jute sack goes on top of the head.

In the Oberelsbach district of Ginolfs, the "Fosenöchers" wear a white mask with a black beard and long flax hair, as well as high, pointed hats and a cane as a "magician".

The drifts in the district of Weißbach "Blue Jew" his mummery: he wears a wooden mask with a white face, red cheeks and a black beard. His clothes consist of white trousers, a blue shirt and a high felt hat adorned with box branches and colorful ribbons. The origin of this Jewish mask is controversial, possibly it goes back to a play. The "Blue Jüd" from Weisbach is clearly not racist or anti-Semitic: in the 18th century, the participation of local Jews in the carnival fun is certainly proven. Another tool in Weißbach is the "Hebblgoaß", a wooden stick with a goat's head.

In Unterelsbach, the carnival masks wear full beards and skirts and a high grenadier hat.

The traditional clothing of the Rhön "Fosenöchder" is made sparingly from the old, worn clothes, supplemented by easily available ingredients from handicrafts and agriculture.

The carved wooden masks in the Rhön are considered to be the northernmost German occurrence, the custom is otherwise only found in the old Bavarian Alpine region and in the Alemannic region on Lake Constance and in the Black Forest. The Rhön mask custom has its origins in carving as a sideline for the poor rural population. It has been reliably documented since the middle of the 19th century; it probably began in the March Revolution of 1848. According to tradition, Oberelsbach was one of the regional strongholds of protest: behind the wooden masks, the dissatisfied citizens could protest about lack of freedom and the censorship of the press without being recognized become.

In Oberelsbach, in Weißbach and in the near Bischofsheim the traditional masks are still carved today. There are examples of old masks in the Rhön Museum Fladungen. The Rhön carnival masks have also found their way on various occasions as carvings down to the beams of the half-timbered houses.
