Churches

  • City parish church of St. Maria Magdalena built from 1428 to 1446 in the Gothic style;
Stained glass in the choir windows from the early 15th century; Around 1657, renovation and redesign by the Würzburg prince-bishop due to the risk of collapse of the north aisle Julius Echter in the course of the Counter Reformation (including the demolition of the Riemenschneider altar); in 1818/20 and 1833 the church was re-Gothicized and the baroque furnishings were dismantled. Further total renovation from 1970 - 1979 with restoration of war damage and restoration of the glass paintings.
Opening times: May to the end of September 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Oct. to April 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.,
Particularly worth seeing inside the church are:
  • Riemenschneider Altar, 15 m high carved winged altar in the parish church, made from June 1490 to September 1492 in the workshop of the Würzburg master w: Tilman Riemenschneider for a wage of 145 guilders.
Essential works on figures and reliefs were probably made by Riemenschneider himself for the first time using a new technique in which he only painted the structures in one color with glaze. The clients did not like this, so that in 1504 they started the Nuremberg sculptor and carver w: Veit Stoss commissioned a colored overpainting for 222 guilders. In 1649 the now dilapidated and no longer "contemporary" altar was replaced by a new one in baroque style, parts of the Riemenschneider altar were partly used or given away.
In 1833 the baroque altar was replaced by a neo-Gothic shrine, in which the parts from Riemenschneider's work that remained in Münnerstadt are reused along with other elements. 1981, 1992 and 1999 further restoration phases with masterful copies of the figures outside of Münnerstadt (in Berlin and Munich), among others by the artist Lothar Bühner.
  • Panel painting by Veit Stoss, four panels with the story of the martyrdom of the Franconian apostles Kilian, Kolonat and Totnan on the left side wall of the choir of the parish church.
Initially made for the back of the Riemenschneider Altar, but continued as an independent work of art after its dismantling in 1649, and of great artistic importance because of the few works that have survived by the artist.

Buildings

Buildings
Tithe barn
  • 1  town hall. Built in half-timbered style around 1469.
  • 2  Tithe barn. Built between 1648 and 1699, today the building houses the fire brigade, the city music school and the city archive.
  • 3  Bildhäuser courtyard, Bauerngasse 42. Was mentioned for the first time in 1365 and is therefore the oldest building complex in the city, a former patrician court and then from 1405 the city branch of the monastery Maria Bildhausen. The Bildhäuser Hof is privately owned and was extensively renovated as a living space in 2007 (monument award 2007 Bad Kissingen district).
  • 4  District Court Building. From 1588 the district court building was the seat of the bishop of Würzburg's bailiff. The building was then built in the years 1744-48 in a baroque style according to plans by Balthasar Neumann extensively rebuilt and expanded; Until 1973 it was the seat of the Münnerstadt district court for the Altlandkreis, today there are offices here.
  • 5  Henneberger Hof, Jörgentorgasse. Originally the home of the Hennberg bailiff. After the Würzburg bishop was able to oust the Lutheran Hennebergers (coat of arms above the gate) from the city (the Hennebergers died out in 1583), it was used from 1600 - 1689 as the seat of the Catholic priest; the building was later also the seat of the high school and is now used as private living space.

city wall

city wall
Jörgentor with front gate and gate courtyard

The medieval city wall with its access gates is still very well preserved in large parts; it was mentioned as early as 1251, although Münnerstadt only received city rights in 1335. The city wall and a large number of smaller wall towers were demolished in some areas in the 20th century, but the boundaries of the old town are still clearly visible all around, even at the defective areas.

  • 6 Jörgentor, eastern city gate with front gate and gate courtyard, built around 1250. The half-timbered upper floor was built towards the end of the 15th century. The stone spheres walled in in the front gate date from 1595. In the past, the Jörgentor was used as a youth hostel, today the branch of the Rhön Club is housed here, which occasionally provides access for strangers in summer.
  • 7 Upper gate, Southern city gate, built in the middle of the 13th century. The upper floor was built around 1570. The 35 meter high Upper City Gate used to be the home of the tower keeper. For the preservation of the Upper Gate is the Türmerverein responsible, which also enables access.
  • 8 Thick tower. Northwestern city tower, built around 1240 and thus the oldest tower of the city wall that no longer exists here. The north-western city gate was located directly at the tower, the tower was probably used as a hole prison in the 16th century. Today it belongs to the neighboring Augustinian youth center, but is not habitable itself and is used for occasional events; the thick tower is not accessible to strangers.
  • Lower gate: The northern city gate on today's access road from the north was blown up in 1945 when the Americans moved in, so that armored vehicles could enter. The gap in the city wall was not closed again.
