Hammelburg, oldest wine town Francs, lies in the southern Rhön in the Lower Franconian part Bavaria.

716 becomes the City of Hammelburg (ad hamulo castellum) first mentioned as a Franconian fort in a document from the Franconian Duke Hedan.

For the Hammelburgers, however, January 7th, 777 is more important. On this day, Charlemagne gave his royal estate Hammelburg to the Fulda monastery. In the accompanying deed of donation, vineyards are mentioned in Franconian for the first time, after which Hammelburg is called "the oldest wine town in Franconia".

Garrison town of Hammelburg: on the "Lagerberg" south of Hammelburg is the "Lager Hammelburg" as an independent district. The infantry school of the German Army in Hammelburg prepares national and international soldiers for their peace-building missions here.
