Bad Kissingen is a city in the north Lower Franconia. The most famous spa Germany[1] is located on the Franconian Saale on the southern edge of the Rhön.

background

Bad Kissingen is Great county seat and belongs to the administrative district of Lower Franconia.

The current city of Bad Kissingen was established in 1972 as part of the Bavarian regional reform through the incorporation of the villages Albertshausen, Arnshausen, Garitz, Hausen, Kleinbrach, Poppenroth, Reiterswiesen and Winkels. The current district of Garitz, located directly on Bad Kissingen's western bank of the Saale, had already grown together with Bad Kissingen at that time, the other villages still had their own townscape at that time.

history

The probably first mention of the Kissinger salt springs can be found in a message from Tacitus about a battle between Hermunduren and Chatten over a border river (the Franconian Saale), which is suitable for salt production. The springs were first mentioned in a document in 823 as the "upper and lower saltworks".

The first written mention of the place is in the year 801 as "in uilla Chizziche" in a deed of donation from the Benedictine monastery Fulda.

In the remainder of the Middle Ages, the salt springs are of no great importance, the brines were mainly used for Salt extraction used.

Maxbrunnen

At the end of the 16th century, the medicinal springs gained more and more attention from doctors. At this point in time, the two sources "Sauerbrunnen", the current "Maxbrunnen" and the "sharp fountain", today's "Pandur" are known. In 1737 the fountains were chemically analyzed in the pharmacy of the Juliusspital in Würzburg. In addition, Balthasar Neumann was commissioned to redesign the fountain. During this measure, the third and sharpest spring, the “Ragoczi”, was discovered or rediscovered as a spring that may have been known earlier and was buried by the Saale.

As early as the 18th century, under the Würzburg bishops, Bad Kissingen developed into a posh seaside resort. In the 19th century, after Franconia fell to Bavaria through the Congress of Vienna, the Wittelsbach family, with Prince Regent Luitpold and King Ludwig I, consistently expanded Kissingen into a seaside resort with international renown and visitors such as Tsar Alexander II and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. King Ludwig II, also a bather, officially raised Kissingen to the bath in 1883.

Since January 2013 Bad Kissingen has officially applied alongside Baden-Baden and Wiesbaden for Germany and other important European world baths (Bath in England, Vichy in France, spa in Belgium, as Marienbad, Carlsbad and Franzensbad in Czech Republic), in the UNESCO World Heritage List to be included. The reasons are not only the cultural monuments of these cities, but above all the enormous importance as social platforms in the 19th century.

The castle ruin Botenlauben (also: Bodenlauben) is the oldest landmark of Bad Kissingen and is enthroned in the southeast on a ridge above the city; it is named after the crusader and minstrel w: Otto von Botenlauben (* probably 1177 in Henneberg, † before 1245 near Kissingen), one of its owners and lived here for a long time. The actual builder and the exact construction time of the castle, probably as early as the middle of the 12th century, are not known.
The castle was besieged for a long time during the Peasants' War in 1525 and according to tradition it was only stormed, plundered, set on fire and not rebuilt after a betrayal by the castle cook. The ruin then served as a quarry.
It was not until 1881 that the remains of the wall were secured; on the tower on the south side, even greater proportions of the original substance are probably preserved; the north tower and the other remains of the wall were essentially built in the various subsequent restoration phases in the previous century.
The ruin has been prepared for visitors, is freely accessible and both round towers are accessible up to the top; From there you have a very good view of Bad Kissingen and the valley of the Franconian Saale.

Graduation towers

Kissingen is considered to be the oldest graduation site in Central Europe. The valuable salt from the Kissinger brine has been extracted here for over 1000 years, in the Middle Ages still in salt marshes, where the water evaporated in the sun and the brine was concentrated before the boiling process. In the Middle Ages, salt was considered "white gold"; it was so valuable that it was sometimes weighed in gold.

The world's first straw graduation tower was built in Bad Kissingen in 1563 as the "Leck und Lepperwerk", a technical innovation at the time: Since the natural brine only bubbled from the spring with a salt content of 3 - 10%, it was allowed to trickle in special structures over bundles of straw stacked meters high the evaporation of the water increased the salt level to up to 25%. The name graduation building is derived from the increased salt content of the brine, the technology itself originally came from Lombardy. The straw in the graduation tower was replaced by blackthorn twigs from 1700, and so-called "thorn stones" were deposited on the brushwood thorns of the thorn graduation works, such as carbonates and sulphate.

The Kissinger graduation buildings were located north of the city in the Saaleauen and, in the best of times, stretched over more than two kilometers to the neighboring town of Hausen. Salt production later became less important, but the medical use of the salty air at the graduation towers for open-air inhalation for brine therapy for breathing difficulties developed. A walkway at the graduation facility with associated seating made it possible to inhale the salty and healthy air directly and consciously. Salt has not been extracted in Bad Kissingen since 1945.

Spa gardens and spa gardens

Around 1800 there were already many other health resorts across Europe with all possible healing methods and for every budget. The aristocratic spa gardens of Bad Kissingen and its buildings in today's sophisticated form emerged from the middle of the 19th century: the Wittelsbachers were regulars here before, they brought their best architects from the capital Munich from the Isar to the small town on the Franconian Saale.

Regent building from the west

The then star architects built a spa district in the Saaleauen for the Bavarian royal family and as a suitable meeting place for the European nobility. The cure therefore naturally also included entertainment options and the corresponding infrastructure such as spa theater, spa music and dance evenings as a social get-together, gambling and horse riding, hunting and fishing.

Kissinger croissant

A Kissinger is a buttered Danish pastry in the shape of a croissant with a hazelnut filling. It probably originated from the fact that in the 19th century during the spa stay in Bad Kissingen one did not have breakfast in the hotel, but rather ate something on the first walk to the mineral springs.
