history

The oldest document about Karlsbad dates from 1325. We only know the title of it: “King Johanns Privilege or Breve testatum and feudal letter about the zoo sub anno 1325 “; but it turns out to be a mere legend that Karlsbad was discovered by Charles IV on a deer hunt in 1347. On the other hand, this emperor left him after a complete and happy healing Crecy In 1358, a permanent lock was built at the source of the wounds that had been preserved, and the area that was soon to be built around the same area received municipal rights as early as 1370. Emperor Joseph I made Karlsbad a royal free city. Count Albrecht Schlick had built the first hospital for the poor in Karlsbad as early as 1531; In 1762 Maria Theresa had the bathing and drinking house at the Mühlbrunnen built, and in 1812 the bathhouse and hospital for poor spa guests was built at the Spitalbrunnen from a donation from Count Kinsky. Until 1520 there was only bathing in Karlsbad; It was only at this time that it was made available on the advice of a Dr. Payer is also used in drinking cures. This doctor also wrote the first medical treatise on Karlovy Vary. Have it printed in 1522. Karlsbad names the Scottish Lord Jakob Ogilvi, Count von Findlater, among his greatest benefactors, who visited Karlsbad more than 20 times and called each visit the construction of a building, a street, a walk, etc. Later, the poet and archbishop Ladislaus Pyrker founded a hospital there, especially for poor officers.

Karlovy Vary wafer
  • The Karlovy Vary wafers are known beyond the city and state borders. These are traditionally baked from two round, thin wafers and a filling in the middle. Meanwhile, vanilla, nut and chocolate fillings are no longer the only ones made. A long time ago there were bakery shops and stalls in several places in the village and the delicious smell attracted visitors from afar. Today you can only get warm wafers in the T. G. Masaryka, near the Billa supermarket.
  • You shouldn't leave Karlovy Vary without an original Karlovy Vary on site Becherovka (formerly: Karlsbader Becher-Bitter) to have tried. The corresponding mixed drink with Becherovka is the so-called concrete, consisting of Becherovka and volumeic water.
