Plauen, located on the upper reaches of the White Elster, is the largest city in the Vogtlandes. It is known as a location for lace production and therefore operates under the election motto Plauen - really great.
background
Plauen was probably founded by the Sorbs and at the beginning of the 12th century belonged to the Counts of Eberstein in Gau Dobna, then from 1230 to the bailiffs of Weida. One of these appears in 1232 as the first "Vogt von Plauen". In 1327 Plauen was given a Bohemian fiefdom, in 1466 by King Georg Podiebrad to the Elector Ernst of Saxony and in 1485 assigned to the Ernestine line. In 1547 Charles V enfeoffed the burgrave Heinrich V, a descendant of the former bailiffs, with Plauen; but his son Heinrich VII sold it to Electoral Saxony for 110,000 guilders in 1569. Since 1524, the Reformation found its way into the city through the Dominican diamond and the order commander Eulner. Cotton knitting was naturalized in Plauen by immigrant Swiss people in the 16th century. From 1656 to 1718 Plauen was the capital of the Vogtlandes the Sachsen-Zeitz branch line, but was then forever united with Electoral Saxony. The population rose to 121,000 by 1910 and fell back to 111,000 by the beginning of the Second World War. Allied air strikes destroyed 75% of the city. Since the post-war period, the population has decreased from 85,000 to 66,000 today, despite incorporation.
