background

Zwickau is of Sorbian origin and soon flourished as it was on the trade route leading from Saxony to Bohemia led. Already around 1030 it appears as a city, originally belonged to the Osterland, then to the Pleißengau and was subordinate to a Vogt because it belonged directly to the empire. Margrave Heinrich the Illustrious of Meissen the city initially received as a pledge for the dowry when his son Albrecht was betrothed to Margarete, Emperor Frederick II's daughter. Nevertheless, Zwickau kept its own administration. In 1311 and 1323 the pledge ownership was confirmed to the Margraves of Meißen, but was converted into a fief by Charles IV. In 1403 the whole city was destroyed by flames. Rebuilt, it developed to ever greater bloom, especially after the 1470 discovery of the Schneeberger Silver mines. The Reformation was introduced as early as 1521, and from here the Anabaptist sect started. The city suffered deep wounds from the Thirty Years and Seven Years' War, from which it only recovered in the 19th century. During this time, coal mining was also established (until 1977) and the automotive industry after 1900. The name "Audi" goes back to the Latin imperative of "Horch", the surname of the founder of this company. After the Second World War, the Trabant was produced in Zwickau, and after the fall of the Wall, a VW branch was established. The population has decreased from over 120,000 in 1989 to 93,750 (as of 2010).
