Meissen is one of the oldest cities Saxony. It is located 24 km northwest of Dresden, at the confluence of the Triebisch in the Elbe. The city was once a bishopric and has an important cathedral and castle. It is known worldwide above all as the location of the oldest European porcelain factory.

background

Meißen is the capital of the district of the same name and has around 28,000 inhabitants.

Meissen was built by King Heinrich I around 928 as a fortress against the Slavs and flourished as the seat of the margrave, burgrave and bishop. In the 15th century it suffered from the Hussites. In 1548 discussions about the Augsburg Interim took place here. In the Schmalkaldic War (1547) Meißen was occupied by the imperial troops, in the Thirty Years War in 1637 by the Swedes taken by surprise and for the most part burned, in 1645 it was conquered by them. The city also suffered multiple hardships during the Seven Years' War. On March 13, 1813, the French Marshal Davoul had the Elbe bridge burned down. On June 15, 1866, the same was blown up by the Saxons when the Prussians invaded. As a bishopric, the city was a cultural and spiritual center until the beginning of this millennium.
