  • 2  town hall, Rathausplatz 1. The building was originally the south wing of the monastery. After the secularization, it was rebuilt into a renaissance castle around 1600. In 1874 there was another conversion to the town hall, which now follows a historicist architectural style (neo-renaissance).
  • 3  former Benedictine monastery, Rathausplatz 1–2. The oldest monastery in the former Mark of Meissen. While the south wing was converted into the town hall, the three other wings of the building have been preserved in their medieval form. The chapter house with groin vault above the central column dates from the middle of the 15th century. Romanesque wall remains and small arched windows can still be seen on the eastern and northern wings. The east wing is now used by the zoo and houses the aquarium system and the natural history cabinet.
  • 4  St. Marien monastery church with mummy tomb, At the monastery church. The church of the former Benedictine monastery was built in the 13th century in the Gothic style. Most of the foundation and outer walls date from this time. In the following centuries, however, the church was damaged and rebuilt several times, which is why it is today evidence of church architecture from the Middle Ages to the 18th century (tower). Most recently, a remarkable reconstruction in Art Nouveau style took place in 1908. Numerous well-preserved, not decayed corpses including grave goods such as flowers, jewelry, books and crosses were discovered in the church crypt.
