Magdeburg - Magdeburg

Magdeburg

Magdeburg is the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt and has about 230,000 inhabitants. Since reunification, the city has changed from a gray industrial city to a lively green city that incorporates the Elbe into the cityscape. The outstanding historical building is the Gothic Magdeburg Cathedral, while the Hundertwasser House is the most important building of modern times.

background

First mentioned in a document in the year 805 AD, Magdeburg experienced a historically turbulent past hardly comparable to other cities in Central Europe. Otto I, Holy Roman Emperor, chose Magdeburg as his residence. Well-known sons of the city are Otto von Guericke, who co-founded vacuum technology and electrostatics, and the baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann. Because of the two historically significant Otto's, Magdeburg is also known as the "Otto City". During the Second World War and in 1631 during the Thirty Years' War, large parts of the old town were destroyed, which is still noticeable in the cityscape today. The destruction in 1631 resulted in more victims than the bombing by the Allies and went down in history as the "Magdeburg Wedding".

Due to its location in the triangle between Leipzig, Berlin and Hanover, the city is a traffic junction as well as an industrial and commercial center. It lies on the Elbe and has an important inland port at the intersection of the Elbe, Elbe-Havel and Mittelland Canal.

There are also numerous leisure facilities, theaters and museums in Magdeburg, including the Magdeburg Theater and the Magdeburg Cultural History Museum. Magdeburg is also a university town and also houses the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and other research facilities such as a Max Planck, Fraunhofer and Leibniz Institute.

The city's landmark is the Gothic Magdeburg Cathedral.
