Tangermünde, located on a hill at the confluence of the Tangiers into the Elbe (hence the city name), was the imperial palace in the Middle Ages and the residence of the Electors of Brandenburg in the 15th century (before they moved to Berlin / Potsdam). The castle and the city fortifications date from this period. In 1362 Archbishop Dietrich von Magdeburg brought about the so-called Magdeburg State Peace for northeast Germany at Tangermünde Castle and concluded a treaty with Emperor Charles IV on April 28, 1374, in which he renounced Mecklenburg.

In 1615 a city fire devastated almost the entire city, two years later the orphan was born Grete Minde convicted of arson in a show trial and executed in the market. The reconstruction of the city took place in the following years in an elaborate half-timbered architecture. On July 1, 1631, Gustav Adolf conquered the city, which has since lost its importance and has developed back into a simple country town, but has retained its uniform cityscape to this day. On October 20, 1806, on their retreat, the Prussians had battles with the French here. Like the large neighboring town of Stendal, Tangermünde was once a member of the Hanseatic League.
