Tourist Attractions
The place has a magnificent, historic old town with numerous imposing buildings:
The six Churches are the city or town built in the Gothic style 1 Marienkirche from the 11th century (rebuilt in the 15th century) with beautiful sculptures and a tower (67 m), the castle or aegidia church (rebuilt in 1752, renewed in 1889), the 2 Nikolaikirche (14th to 15th century), the St. Martin's Church (built in Gothic style from 1884-87 according to plans by Hase-Hannover) with beautiful glass windows and tower (68 m), the Catholic Bonifatius Church (built in Gothic style in 1865) the old 3 Stephanskirche in the suburb of Waldau.
Of the other buildings, that is above all 4 lock remarkable in the mountain city, which stands at the highest point of the city on a mountain that falls steeply down to the Saale. Also as Crown of Anhalt known, the residence of the princes of Anhalt-Bernburg dates from the 10th century. In the 16th century, Prince Wolfgang von Anhalt-Köthen, who was also Prince von Bernburg at the time, had the palace expanded in the Renaissance style. It essentially still has this shape today. In the castle moat, bears are kept in a kennel, the heraldic animal of Bernburg ("Bärenburg") and the Ascanian dynasty.

Bernburg's reputation as the location of a Nazi killing center is inglorious, in which almost 10,000 sick and disabled people and 5,000 prisoners from concentration camps were murdered as part of the euthanasia program. A memorial was set up here from 1981:

activities
Despite its small population, there is still a lot to do in Bernburg, such as a visit to the outdoor and indoor pools, the fairy tale garden or the zoo, as well as a ride on the Park railway or the MS Saalefee are recommended. There are also opportunities to go bowling, bowls or a sauna, and there is also a cinema.
If the weather permits, a hike along the Saale is worthwhile (up and down the river). The paths along the river are partly paved and therefore very easy to walk on.

Practical advice
For non-residents, the Bernburg dialect may sound unusual at first (but it is also the case in other areas in Germany).
Understanding in English or other foreign languages can be a bit tricky in Bernburg.
The main post office is located at Friedensallee 10, right in the city center. Smaller parcel shops etc. can also be found easily.
The following webcams are available to get a picture of the current face of the city: market and Saale bridge.
Bernburg is that driest Place of Germany. Due to its special location in the rain shadow of the Harz, precipitation occurs comparatively little. Otherwise, as in the rest of Central Germany, the climate shows distinct seasons, with some hot summer days (including at night) and cool to cold winter days.
