Koethen is a county seat in Saxony-Anhalt. From the 13th to the 19th century it was the royal seat of the Principality of Anhalt-Köthen, where Johann Sebastian Bach lived for a few years and is considered the place of origin of homeopathy and ornithology.

background

Köthen, first mentioned in a document in 1115, is one of the oldest settlements in the region and for many centuries was the historic residence of the Principality of Anhalt-Köthen, which until 1847 was one of those small independent territories within Germany. Anhalt-Köthen was, after Luther's home Electoral Saxony, the second territory to adopt the Lutheran doctrine of the faith. Prince Ludwig I was one of the founders and lifelong chairman of the Fruitful Society, the first academy to maintain the German language. Köthen thus became a center of literary life. The Princely Printing House founded at this time was the first German school book publisher.

Later, the city became known as the place of activity of Johann Sebastian Bach, who was Kapellmeister here from 1717 to 1723 at the Fürstenhof and, among other things, the Brandenburg concerts, the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach and the Well-tempered piano composed.

Memorial to Samuel Hahnemann (left) and Arthur Lutze (right)

Samuel Hahnemann worked 1821-1835 ducal personal physician in Köthen, where he significantly further developed his theories that had already been started, which as homeopathy became known. Köthen is therefore considered to be a starting point for the global homeopathy movement. The faith healer Arthur Lutze, who settled in Köthen in 1846, was also a supporter of homeopathy. Its reputation attracted tens of thousands to the Lutzeklinik every year. Johann Friedrich Naumann, who is considered the founder of ornithology, was also curator of the ducal bird collection of Köthen from 1821, which was probably the first of its kind.

Since 1891, Köthen has been the location of a technically oriented university of applied sciences (formerly Friedrichs-Polytechnikum), today part of the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. The focus is on mechanical engineering, process engineering, and power plant technology.

The city suffered little damage in World War II and therefore, with its winding streets in the center and much preserved building fabric, still offers a comparatively historical city center with buildings from different style epochs. Today Köthen is the district town of the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district, which was formed in 2007 and includes both parts of the Central German chemistry triangle as well as the historical region of Anhalt and up to Pre-flaming enough.

  • Hallescher Turm. Part of the medieval city fortifications.
  • Lutzeklinik. The popular homeopath and faith healer Arthur Lutze was able to build a splendid clinic in the style of neo-gothic and renaissance in 1854/55 thanks to wealthy supporters and patients. In the large hospital wards, Lutze treated thousands of destitute people for free every year. The 72 rooms were much more comfortable for paying private patients. In a sense, they were a precursor to later wellness clinics. After Lutze's death, the building was used for medical purposes until the end of World War II, after which it was used as the seat of the district administration. Since 2016 it has been converted to accommodate a hospice and a day care center for the mentally handicapped in the future.
  • railway station. Not a sight in the classical sense. The somewhat run-down train station is suffering from so much modernization backlog that it is interesting again for nostalgic people. Historic reception hall from the imperial era, form signals, carved wooden waiting benches, mosaic paved platforms, circular stairs, wooden platform roofs. It is on the list of monuments as an “important testimony to railway history”. All you have to do is clad the lift for the disabled with some cast iron, then the film crew can move up for the 20s flick.
