The city of Halle (Saale) was founded in 806 Chronicle of Moissac first time as Halla mentioned in a document. It owes the city's development and prosperity to the numerous brine springs in the area, which are located on the Halleschen Marktplatz Fault formed. From the Central German word hal For Salt spring, salt works The name of the city is probably also derived from this. There was also a settlement earlier. Since 968 the city belonged to the Archdiocese of Magdeburg founded by Otto I. and from 1281 to the Hanseatic League.
In 1418 the construction of the Red Tower, which would later become Halle’s landmark, began. In 1484 the Moritzburg became an archbishop Ernst II of Saxony erected, with which the self-confident saltworkers, the Halloren, should be counteracted. From now until 1680 Halle was the capital and residence of the Archdiocese of Magdeburg. Under cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg Halle experienced a wedding. An extensive construction program was carried out in his favorite residence. The Reformation marked the end of this era. The cardinal fled with his court and art treasures Mainz and Aschaffenburg.
After Herzog's death August von Sachsen-Weißenfels In 1680 the city fell first to the Electorate of Brandenburg and later to the Kingdom of Prussia. In 1694 the University of Halle and in 1698 the Francke Foundations were founded as an orphanage and later a center for the early enlightenment. One of the foundations since 1710 was the Canstein Bible Institute. Because of its liberal spirit, the university has the reputation of being the first “modern” university and was a role model for other German and US universities.[2]

The composer Georg Friedrich Handel was born in Halle in the 17th century. That is why the Handel Festival takes place annually in June in Halle, an event that attracts numerous visitors from home and abroad and extends over 10 days. The conclusion after numerous concerts and operas is crowned by fireworks in the Galgenberg Gorge.
After the Napoleonic Wars, the city fell to the 1807 Kingdom of Westphalia and in 1815 back to Prussia. The city owes renewed economic growth to its natural resources such as lignite and hard coal as well as clay, gravel and porphyry. In 1890 the population reached 100,000 and Halle became a major city. In the same year the Social Democratic Party of Germany was given its current name at a party congress in the city. But industry left its mark on the city. The actor, comedian and writer who grew up in Halle Curt Goetz therefore referred to the city in his memoirs very hintingly as charming.[3] The community of scholars, founded in 1652, has been in existence since 1878 German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina their permanent seat in Halle.
Despite its proximity to the chemical companies Leuna and Buna, Halle was largely spared from area bombing in 1945. As a result, it has a unique urban character among major German cities. During the short existence of the state of Saxony-Anhalt after the dissolution of Prussia from 1947 to 1952, Halle was its capital. After that, the city was the capital of the district of the same name until 1990.
In the second half of the 20th century, the city was the center of the chemical industry. With the then still independent city of Halle-Neustadt and the residential area Halle-Silberhöhe, large prefabricated housing estates for the chemical workers were created. The city itself fell into disrepair during this time. With the political turnaround, the picture changed: the environmental damage caused by the chemical industry decreased, and the Diva Halle was able to shed its notorious gray very quickly.[4] Even before the fall of the Wall in 1980, the nationally known New theaters of Peter Sodann founded.
With around 237,000 inhabitants, Halle is the largest city in Saxony-Anhalt, the fifth largest city in the new federal states and No. 31 among German cities. It is not only an important economic center and an important transport hub, but also a city of science and culture. In addition to the university with around 20,000 students, the city is the location of the Burg Giebichenstein art college, several national research institutes, and since 2008 the seat of the German National Academy Leopoldina and the Federal Cultural Foundation. The cultural highlights include: the art collections of the Moritzburg Foundation and the State Museum for Prehistory.
getting there
By plane
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5e/Bahnhof_Flughafen_Halle_Leipzig.jpg/220px-Bahnhof_Flughafen_Halle_Leipzig.jpg)
The 1 Leipzig / Halle Airport(IATA: LEJ) is about 30 km southeast of Halle and offers regular flight connections to some airports in Germany and some European destinations as well as charter flights. The airport has a 24-hour operating permit and therefore also serves as a freight hub and transhipment point for parcel post. It handles more than two million passengers annually.
The airport is connected to the long-distance and regional rail network. The airport train station is located directly below the terminal building and can be reached via (escalator) stairs and elevators. There are IC trains from Halle on the Hanover - Leipzig line every hour and the S-Bahn (S 5) every half hour on the Halle - Leipzig - Zwickau line. IC and S-Bahn differ in the fare, the IC has a slightly more expensive tariff. The travel time to Halle main station is around 10 minutes in both cases.
A taxi ride into the Halle city area costs around € 40. The taxi drivers come almost exclusively from Leipzig. Those arriving by car can easily reach the airport via the A9 motorway (from Berlin, Munich) and the Schkeuditzer Kreuz and then via the A14 (from Dresden, Magdeburg). To commute between the airport and the inner cities of Leipzig and Halle, it is best to use the A14 and drive off in the direction of the center. Several chargeable parking spaces and a multi-storey car park are available at the airport. The parking garage is directly connected to the terminal and enables a dry arrival / departure and the parking fee here is € 2.00 per hour (minimum € 5; as of Sept. 2014). The long-term parking spaces are, however, only a short distance from the terminal and a lot cheaper in the long run. All major rental car providers also have a booth right in the arrivals area.
Another (probably more attractive) alternative is the Berlin airports These serve far more domestic and international destinations than Leipzig Airport.

The 2 Central Station is about 1.5 km east of the city center and can be reached on Leipziger Straße in about 15 to 20 minutes on foot or by tram (lines 2, 5 and 7). In addition, the main train station and the adjacent Riebeckplatz are the junction of numerous tram and bus routes to various parts of the city.
Halle is an important railway junction with one or two hour ICE and IC connections to Hanover (via Magdeburg), Berlin (via Wittenberg), Dresden (via Leipzig), Munich and Frankfurt am Main (each via Erfurt).
In regional traffic there are hourly connections to Magdeburg via Köthen, Dessau / Wittenberg via Bitterfeld, Eilenburg via Delitzsch, Erfurt via Weißenfels / Naumburg, Kassel via Sangerhausen / Nordhausen, Goslar via Aschersleben / Halberstadt and Bernburg. S-Bahn trains of the Central German S-Bahn go to Altenburg or Zwickau (via the airport and Leipzig) (S5), to Leipzig via Schkeuditz (S3), and to the suburbs of Trotha (S3) and Nietleben (S7).
The train station is barrier-free and open around the clock, is managed (bar on the 1st floor) and has heated waiting rooms. Due to extensive renovation and modernization measures, restrictions on the offer are possible until at least the end of 2021.

The inner city of Halle has been almost restored since the early 1990s and, where this process has already ended, shines in new splendor with numerous old buildings decorated with stucco.
The high number of old buildings, especially from the Wilhelminian era, is remarkable due to the low level of damage caused by the war. However, large dilapidated parts of the old town, especially around the cathedral, were replaced with unsuitable industrially manufactured prefabricated buildings, or after the fall of the Wall, new buildings were added. There are very few half-timbered buildings left.

1 Hallescher Dom. The cathedral is located on the Saale, near the old town. It was founded by the Dominican mendicant order. It was finished around 1300 and was initially called St. Paul on the Holy Cross. The hall church had no tower and no transept. Around 1510, the cathedral was completely rebuilt by Cardinal Albrecht by Bastian Binder. Albrecht, who feared for his peace of mind in heaven, collected up to 20,000 relics. The place of storage, the cathedral, was called the "Hallesche Heilthum". The magnificent interior was created around 1523 by Matthias Grünewald, Lukas Cranach the Elder. Ä. and Peter Schro. The renovation resulted in a total work of art in the style of late baroque and early renaissance. The round-gabled cathedral was the largest sacred structure in Central Germany in the Middle Ages. As an opponent of the Reformation, Cardinal Albrecht had to leave Halle in 1541 and the cathedral's reputation was diminished. In 1635 the Duke August of Saxony built in a rich early baroque interior. From 1688 it served the Evangelical Reformed as a church. In 1851 the baroque organ was renewed. In 1883-1896 the interior was renewed in the neo-Gothic style. In 1957-1959 the outer walls and the interior were poorly renovated due to the great shortage of materials. In 1996 the Cathedral Foundation of Saxony-Anhalt bought the building and renovation began from the ground up. This work on the building fabric was essentially completed in 2005, but the works of art still have to be restored.
Opening times: Tuesday: 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. - 4.30 p.m. Friday: 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Exhibitions and events take place regularly in the cathedral.
2 Market Church of Our Dear Women, At the Marienkirche 2 (between Marktplatz and Hallmarkt). The late Gothic hall church was built in 1529–54 and replaced the older churches of St. Gertruden and St. Marien. It is considered to be one of the most important late Gothic buildings in Central Germany and one of the most perfect churches in this style. Its four towers are still from the two previous buildings, the church was built between the two existing pairs of towers. Together with the Red Tower, they are considered a landmark of Halle and gave it the nickname City of the five towers. Inside the church you will find valuable furnishings from the 15th and 16th centuries, above all those by Lucas Cranach the Elder. Ä. designed main altar and the magnificent pulpit made of sandstone, which marks the transition from the late Gothic to the Renaissance. The two organs with baroque prospectuses from the 17th and 18th centuries are also worth seeing. On Saturday at 3 p.m. there is a church tour, on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and on Thursday at 12 p.m. there is organ music.Open: Mon-Sat 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sun 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

- 15 Moritzburg Hall. Fortified castle in late Gothic style from the late 15th century. The castle was badly damaged in the Thirty Years' War and remained an imposing ruin in the centuries that followed. Parts were rebuilt around 1900, and in 1904 the Municipal Museum of Arts and Crafts moved in. Today the Moritzburg serves as an exhibition building and, in summer, a backdrop for theater and opera performances.
- 16 Giebichenstein Castle. Medieval castle above the Saale. From the upper castle from the 12th century, only the gate tower and the foundation walls of the palace and the residential tower have been preserved. The better preserved lower castle was built in the middle of the 15th century. It served as a secondary residence for the Archbishops of Magdeburg. Giebichenstein Castle has housed the art college of the same name.

If you bring the job yourself, okay. Otherwise the call center industry is booming in Halle. Overall, however, unemployment is very high, so creative investors are very welcome.
security
In general, Halle is just as safe as any other city of comparable size in Germany (especially when it comes to crime in general).
Nevertheless, there are areas in Halle that you shouldn't necessarily go to in the dark. This essentially includes the southern parts of Halle-Neustadt and the Silberhöhe district. Occasionally (like everywhere else) there are fights in the downtown area.
There is no need to fear any particular natural dangers. Climbing on the rocks along the Saale (northern part of the city) should be avoided.
