Naumburg (Saale) is a city in the south Saxony-Anhalt with about 32,000 inhabitants. It has a well-preserved and worth seeing old town with numerous medieval, renaissance and baroque buildings. The main attraction is the late Romanesque Naumburg Cathedral with its remarkable donor figures, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018. The relatively small city is rich in sights and has retained its leisurelyness despite tourist development. Thomas Mann has it in his novel Doctor Faustus under the name of Kaisersaschern set a literary monument.
The district Bad Kosen is a spa and brine bath.
getting there
By plane
The closest commercial airport is the Leipzig Halle Airport(IATA: LEJ), which can be reached in around an hour and a half by train (change in Leipzig Hbf. or Halle Hbf.). The international airport Frankfurt(IATA: FRA) is about four hours by train.
By train
At the 1 Central Station, about two kilometers west of the city center, local and individual long-distance trains stop. When traveling from Frankfurt you need to change trains in Erfurt necessary. The closest long-distance stops with a large number of offers are now Leipzig, Halle and Erfurt, to which there are regular direct Nv connections.
A rather insignificant railway line for the journey is the Unstruttalbahn from Cheeks or. Nebra. The trains end on 2 Naumburg-Ost train station and also stop at the main train station. The Naumburg-Ost train station is about one and a half kilometers east of the center.
In the street
Naumburg has its own junction 21 at the . From there the over 14 km to Naumburg.
By bus
Long-distance buses do not go to Naumburg (as of January 2017).
By bicycle

mobility
Naumburg is in the tariff zone of the Central German Transport Association (MDV), Zone 255. Association tickets valid in this zone are therefore also valid in city buses, as is the Saxony-Anhalt (Saxony / Thuringia) ticket. There is a line overview here (pdf file)Three city bus routes operate in Naumburg. Those who are only out and about in the old town will be faster on foot (also from the parking lots).
The 3 Naumburg tram (Photo) runs once halfway around the city center every 30 minutes from the main train station (single trip € 2, reduced € 1; sales also in the car, network tickets are recognized). Historic vehicles that were built in Gotha between the 1950s and 1970s are used. If you are lucky, you can also drive with the Lindner railcar (17) built in 1928.
The connection between the actual Naumburg and the district of Großjena in the Bluebellgrund, a meadow landscape lined with vineyards at the confluence of the Saale and Unstrut rivers, is made by a non-motorized passenger ferry from March to October, only powered by the flow energy of the water (bike can be taken).
Tourist Attractions
1 Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. The late Romanesque to early Gothic cathedral is the landmark of the city of Naumburg, which is one of the most valuable European monuments. The construction of the three-aisled, two-choir basilica with four towers and a cloister began before 1213. The early Gothic west choir was built around 1250. In the first half of the 14th century the east choir was enlarged in the high Gothic style. The Romanesque crypt under the east choir was built around 1170 and was part of a previous building. The pulpit dates from 1466. The southwest tower was not completed until 1884. Between 1960 and 1968 the cathedral was completely restored.Open: March to October Mon-Sat 9 am-6pm, Sun, public holidays 11 am-6pm; November to February Mon-Sat 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Sun and public holidays 12 p.m.-4 p.m.Price: € 7.50, reduced € 5.50.
They are world famous twelve donor figures in the west choir, which were created after 1250. All figures are life-size and carved in limestone. The most famous characters are Uta von Ballenstedt and Ekkehard II of Meissen on the north side of the west choir as well Rule indis and Herrmann I. opposite on the south side. They are among the earliest realistic depictions of individual faces in the European Middle Ages. The figure of Uta is sometimes referred to as the “most beautiful woman of the Middle Ages” and Umberto Eco wrote about her: “If you ask me which woman in the history of art I would go out to dinner and spend an evening, there would be Uta von Naumburg first . “Another interesting work of art - much more recent - in the cathedral are the windows of the Elisabeth chapel designed by Leipzig artist Neo Rauch in 2007.
In the medieval city center are next to the 2 Renaissance town hall (1517 to 1528) with Ratskeller the striking 3 Kayser house with three Renaissance gables and the late Gothic 4 City Church of St. Wenceslas. This three-aisled hall church was built between 1517 and 1523 and was restored after being damaged in 1945. Its interior was redesigned in 1724. The organ was examined personally by Johann Sebastian Bach and, after its extensive restoration, can be heard regularly in concerts. There are characteristic ones in the side streets Town houses with beautiful gables.
Marienstraße leads north from the market square to the 5 Marientor. This city gate, dating from the 15th century, is the only one of 7 city gates that has survived and is equipped with an outer gate, battlements, inner gate and portcullis as well as a watch tower.
The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) spent his childhood, youth and the last years of his life in Naumburg. There is an exhibition in him 6 Nietzsche House, Dedicated to Weingarten 18, his former home. Immediately behind it, in a new building, is the Nietzsche Documentation Center, where researchers collect and process Nietzsche's intellectual legacy. There are also changing exhibitions and events here. 200 meters from the Nietzsche House, on the Holzmarkt, there is a 7 monument, which shows Nietzsche in dialogue with a curious girl.
In the district 1 Großjena (approx. 6 km north of the city center) is the House of the sculptor, painter and graphic artist Max Klinger (1857–1920), open from the end of March to the end of October Tue-Sun 10 am–5pm. The one created around 1722 can be found nearby "Stone picture book", a series of 12 reliefs carved into the adjacent sandstone rock, most of which depict scenes from the Bible. Both are in Flower base Located on the Unstrut, it can be reached on a one-kilometer walk from the car park at the Blumgrund campsite after having crossed the Saale by ferry.
In the district Bad Kosen there are, among other things, the spa facilities, the former Pforta Monastery with numerous medieval buildings (current state school Pforta and state winery Monastery Pforta) as well as the castle ruins Saaleck and Rudelsburg to see; See there for details.
