Goseck is a small town in the Saale-Unstrut region South of Saxony-Anhalt. It is mainly known for the castle with its Romanesque castle church and for a prehistoric solar observatory from the Neolithic period discovered here.

background

Apparently there was a comparatively developed culture in the region from around 7000 years ago, as the circular moat indicates.

In the Middle Ages and the early modern period, the history of Goseck was closely linked to the castle, first mentioned in the 9th century, which was later converted into a Benedictine monastery and finally into a manor after the Reformation. The neighboring town of Markröhlitz was incorporated into Goseck in 1950.

Goseck received supraregional attention by researching the presumed Neolithic solar observatory, the traces of which were discovered in aerial photographs in 1991, whereupon the facility was excavated in 2002-04 and then reconstructed.

Goseck's plan

By train

The closest train station is 1 Guillotine, regional trains on the Halle – Weimar – Erfurt – Eisenach line stop there every two hours. From there it is 3 km to Goseck, which can only be done on foot or by bike, as the small Saale bridge is closed to motorized traffic at this point. Otherwise, you'd better go in Weissenfels (RE Magdeburg – Naumburg or Leipzig – Erfurt or Leipzig – Jena – Saalfeld or RB Halle – Eisenach) get off, from where there is a bus connection to Goseck.

By bus

From Weißenfels there is a bus line 792 to Goseck approximately every hour. The journey takes around half an hour. Of Naumburg (Saale) Bus line 623 runs four times a day on weekdays and three times a day on weekends, with a journey time also around half an hour. Both lines are from the PVG Burgenlandkreis operated, it applies MDVTariff.

In the street

Goseck can only be reached via small side streets: L 205 from Naumburg and L 206 from Weißenfels. Both cities are about 10 km away and the journey takes about 15 minutes each. Coming from further afield, leave the A 9 motorway (Berlin – Nuremberg) at the junction Weissenfels, Goseck is quite well signposted.

Tourism routes that lead through Goseck are the Romanesque Road (South route 2, from Merseburg or Freyburg) and the Heavenly pathsWebsite of this institution (of Hall or Nebra).

By boat

It was demolished in 1041 and replaced by a Benedictine monastery, which was consecrated in 1053. The Romanesque castle church can be traced back to this, which corresponds to the eastern parts (transept with crossing and choir) including the crypt of the former monastery church. As a result of the Reformation, the monastery was secularized in 1540 and converted into a manor. In place of the former nave, Bernhard von Pölnitz had the little Renaissance castle built around 1609. After the owners of the castle were expropriated in 1945, it was used as a youth hostel and school. The castle church was gradually renovated from 1997 to 2014 and is again in good condition.
