Schönebeck (Elbe) is located around 15 kilometers south of the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt Magdeburg on the Elbe and consists of the 10 districts: left Elbisch Schönebeck, Bad Salzelmen, Felgeleben, Frohse and Sachsenland, right Elbenau, Grünewalde, Plötzky, Pretzien and Ranies.

Schönebeck can look back on a history of more than 800 years of salt production using brine. The history of the health resort Bad Salzelmen began with the discovery of the healing properties of brine. The first salt water spa in Germany opened its doors here in 1802.
