The small town Worlitz is a district of the city Oranienbaum-Wörlitz, about 15 km east of Dessau located near the Elbe. It is mainly known for the adjacent park, which attracts visitors from all over the world.

background

Once a small agricultural town, Wörlitz was the preferred residence of Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau (1740-1817), who had a castle and a landscape park built here in the English style between 1769 and 1773. The facilities, which are equipped with many small architectures, replicas and motifs from an educational background and are not enclosed, have been open to the public since their construction. They are considered to be the largest English landscape park in Central Europe and an outstanding testimony to the Enlightenment and belong with other facilities as Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Despite this landmark of international standing, which is estimated to attract 750,000 visitors a year, making it one of the most visited travel destinations in Saxony-Anhalt, the small town of Wörlitz has retained its original and in parts remarkably provincial character.

In the street

Wörlitz is about 10 kilometers east of the A 9 (Munich - Berlin) and can be reached quickly from there. Departure options (from the north) via the Vockerode exit through Vockerode via the L 133 or Dessau-Ost, then B 107 to Oranienbaum and then on the L 133 to Wörlitz. The way to Wörlitz is signposted.

On foot

Wörlitz is on European long-distance footpath E11 and on Lutherwegthat grazes the city northwest. Both long-distance hiking trails come from Dessau on the same route as the R1, touch the park on the Rousseau island and then follow the road to the Coswiger ferry (attention, winter hikers: the ferry does not operate in January and February).

By boat

There is a mooring for river boats near the ferry to Coswig. Some river cruise ships dock there. Passengers are picked up by chartered buses. Tourist Attractions

Parks

The main attraction in Wörlitz is Wörlitz plants, often too Wörlitz Park called (not entirely correct, a park would be fenced, the Wörlitz facilities are not). They are one of the largest facilities in continental Europe designed in the English landscape style and have an area of 120 hectares. Numerous visual axes connect prominent points in the park with each other and with points of view outside. The systems are located north of the urban area of Wörlitz and are closed to the north by the Elbe dike. The transition from the city to the facilities is designed in the same way as the gradual transition to agricultural areas. In addition to the castle, the Wörlitz complex contains numerous other buildings and small architecture. They were created under the rule of Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau (1740-1817) from the 1760s to around 1800 and were horticultural master Johann Schoch the Elder. (1728–1793), Johann Schoch the Younger (1758–1826), Johann Eyserbeck (1738–1818) and Johann Neumark (1741–1811). The buildings were designed by Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff (1736–1800). The facilities are largely unchanged and are an outstanding testimony to the Enlightenment era. Today they are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm.

The systems are located on the southern edge of the floodplain of the Elbe and include bodies of water. The Wörlitzer See is an oxbow lake of the Elbe, Large and Small Walloch are traces of a flood that flooded the still half-finished park. The lakes are connected by canals, which in turn represent visual axes. Towards the Elbe, a dike protects the facilities, which at the same time connects views and small architectures as a circumferential path. Designed parking areas with extensive flower borders alternate with bodies of water, meadows, even agricultural areas and give a varied landscape. The buildings seize travel memories Grand Tour of Prince Franz and have models for example in landscape parks in England, various bridges, structures from classical antiquity to a replica of Vesuvius. Designed plants like that labyrinth or the hermitage are allegories of life with motifs of the Enlightenment, Rousseau Island or that monument are dedicated to memories of the dead.

Access

The Wörlitzer facilities are from Wörlitzer See in a smaller southern part with castle, castle garden, synagogue, gray house, church, Neumark's garden and a larger northern part with Gothic house, Schoch's garden, Flora temple, large and small walloch, Elbe dike with monument, Venus temple , Luisenklippen, the New Garden and other architectures. The palace garden is accessible at various points towards the city. Neumark's garden can be reached via a pavilion at Hard as iron or with the tea dove or rose island ferry. The northern part of the plant is at the eastern end near the stone or at the western end at Palm house, accessible. If the official ferry does not go near the synagogue, you have to walk around the lake.

The facilities are freely accessible, donation boxes are set up at the entrances. Cycling is prohibited, dogs are strictly on a leash.

You should plan two to three hours for the systems for an initial overview, plus the time to visit the buildings. Overall, a whole day or an overnight stay is worthwhile if you want to experience the much quieter evening or morning hours. The highlights of the year are the crocus bloom in spring, the color of the leaves in autumn and cold winters when the lakes and canals are frozen over.

Entrance to the park is not charged. The ferries (official ferry, rose island, tea dove ferry to Neumark's garden) cost 50 cents per person each. The castle, Gothic house and stone can only be viewed as part of guided tours and cost 5 or 4 euros (stone) for adults. There are discounts for retirees, students, children, schoolchildren and the disabled. kitchen

One cannot help but notice that the level of the destination is not reflected in the gastronomic level. Few houses offer more than uninspired cuisine for the mass taste. There is an apparently unchanged offer for decades (albeit with today's prices) and a service that hardly deserves this name. It's fast, especially on nice weekends Land under and expect long waiting times even for the simplest orders.
