The small town Worlitz is a district of the city Oranienbaum-Wörlitz, about 15 km east of Dessau located near the Elbe. It is mainly known for the adjacent park, which attracts visitors from all over the world.

Once a small agricultural town, Wörlitz was the preferred residence of Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau (1740-1817), who had a castle and a landscape park built here in the English style between 1769 and 1773. The facilities, which are equipped with many small architectures, replicas and motifs from an educational background and are not enclosed, have been open to the public since their construction. They are considered to be the largest English landscape park in Central Europe and an outstanding testimony to the Enlightenment and belong with other facilities as Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Despite this landmark of international standing, which is estimated to attract 750,000 visitors a year, making it one of the most visited travel destinations in Saxony-Anhalt, the small town of Wörlitz has retained its original and in parts remarkably provincial character.

getting there

By train

From the end of March to the beginning of October, the Dessau-Wörlitzer Railway runs every two hours from the Dessau main station via Waldersee, Mildensee, Kapen and Oranienbaum to Wörlitz. (Timetable). The journey time is approx. 35 minutes for the 19 km long route. The 1 Wörlitz station lies on the southern edge of the village. It is a 15-minute walk to the castle / park.

The closest DB train station is Coswig on the northern side of the Elbe (ferry).

By bus

Regional transport buses from Wittenberg depart from Dessau via Waldersee, Vockerode and Griesen to Wörlitz - the buses depart from the bus station in Dessau, directly at the main train station (bus platform 2) or from Wittenberg to Wörlitz - the departure of the buses is directly at the main train station (bus platform 7 - Timetable (pdf)).

In the street

Wörlitz is about 10 kilometers east of the A 9 (Munich - Berlin) and can be reached quickly from there. The main attraction in Wörlitz is Wörlitz plants, often too Wörlitz Park called (not entirely correct, a park would be fenced, the Wörlitz facilities are not).
