The small town Oranienbaum is a district of the city of Oranienbaum-Wörlitz and is located in the district of Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt. The main attraction is the castle with a park in the style of the Dutch Baroque.

background

The village founded in the 12th century Nischwitz came in the 17th century to the princess Henriette Katharina von Oranien, who was married to the Dessau prince Johann Georg II. She had the place redesigned into a representative baroque ensemble with palace, park and town. The central axis of the castle continues both into the park and into the town across the square market square.

Henriette Katharina promoted, as did her sister Louise Henriette, who had married the Great Elector in Brandenburg and Oranienburg built, handicrafts and trade, which allowed the place to flourish economically. About a hundred years under Prince Leopold III. the strict baroque park was expanded with English landscape garden elements and small buildings in the Chinese style.

Oranienbaum was connected to the railway network in the 19th century. In the forests bordering to the west, an extensive military training area was built and, from 1935, an army ammunition facility and a factory for explosives, in which the self-firing systems for the GDR border were later manufactured. The site is now an industrial park.
