Bitterfeld-Wolfen is a city in Central German chemistry triangle in Saxony-Anhalt.

background

The town Bitterfeld-Wolfen was created in 2007 through the merger of the two cities Bitterfeld and Wolfen and the three municipalities of Greppin, Holzweißig and Thalheim and is a major district town in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district, which was also founded in 2007. In 2009, the Bobbau community also joined the new unified community. The places have no common history and no common urban development, which you can see from the torn cityscape without a clear center (including some of the individual places).

Some places have a history that can be traced back to the late Middle Ages. However, they did not gain importance until the middle of the 19th century, when brick and lignite deposits discovered in the region laid the basis for a rapidly expanding fuel (briquettes), building material and, above all, chemical industry since the beginning of the 20th century. Even today, the chemical industry not only shapes large parts of the cityscape, e.g. through branched pipe bridges, but also the image of the city. The landscape following the former lignite mines in the south of the city, on the other hand, is developing into a recreational and recreational landscape.

Bitterfeld was an agricultural town and regional administrative seat for the Saxon, since 1815 Prussian, office or district of Bitterfeld. The railway junction that was built in 1857 and the clay and lignite mines laid the basis for industrialization and explosive growth of the city with the new industrial areas to the west and north of the historic center.

Wolfen was an insignificant street village on the Chaussee Leipzig - Dessau and formed the border town of Saxony and Prussia to the duchy / Free State of Anhalt bordering to the north, which ran along the brook Fuhne proceeded. In 1909 the paint and later film company Agfa founded a paint and later film factory on Wolfener Flur, which fundamentally changed the cityscape with the industrial areas south and west and residential areas west and north of the old village. In 1961 Wolfen expanded north over the Fuhne and got a satellite town built in the prefabricated building style Wolfen-Nord, which became Wolfens population center and, despite massive vacancies, remains of Bitterfeld-Wolfen to this day.
