The town Graefenhainichen lies on the edge of the Dübener Heide between Dessau and Bitterfeld. Graefenhainichen is the birthplace of Paul Gerhardt, for whom a burial chapel was built here in 1844. At the edge of the city is the artificial Gremminer See, which fills the former Golpa-Nord opencast mine.

The 1 Graefenhainichen station is just under a kilometer south of the center on the railway line from Berlin to Halle and Leipzig between Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Bitterfeld. The travel time from Bitterfeld with the S-Bahn Central Germany (hourly) is 12 '.

On the northern edge of the city, on a peninsula in the Gremminer See of the former Golpa-Nord open-cast lignite mine, you will find the most important attraction in Graefenhainichen: Ferropolis - the city made of iron. In the open-air museum, which was opened in 1995, there are five large open-cast mining equipment, excavators and spreaders, to be viewed. They are grouped around an open-air stage and have names Max Max, Medusa, Big wheel etc. The museum area was used as an arena for Concert events designed (capacity up to 25,000 spectators).Open: November to April daily 10 am to 5 pm, April to November daily 10 am to 7 pm.Price: Admission: € 4, reduced € 3, family ticket (2 adults and max. 4 children) € 8.
