The town Grossenhain is the center of the Grossenhainer care and is located in the north of the federal state of Saxony.

Grossenhain, a foundation of the Sorbs (around 900), used to belong to the Margraviate of Meißen and was often the residence of Frederick the Freidigen and Diezmann, of whom the former suffered a defeat here by the Margraves Waldemar and Johann von Brandenburg in 1312. As a result of this, Großenhain came to Brandenburg, but was returned to Meißen as early as 1316.

By train

  • RE 15 Dresden Hbf – Dresden-Neustadt – Großenhain Cottb Bf – Ruhland – Hosena – Hoyerswerda (every two hours)
  • RE 18 Dresden Hbf – Dresden-Neustadt – Großenhain Cottb Bf – Ruhland – Senftenberg – Cottbus (every two hours)
  • RB 31 Dresden Hbf – Großenhain Cottb Bf – Elsterwerda (every two hours)

The journey from Dresden takes about 30 minutes with the RE and 40 minutes with the RB. It takes 17 minutes to drive from Elsterwerda, 50 minutes from Hoyerswerda, 1:10 hours from Cottbus. From Berlin you can change in Senftenberg or Elsterwerda to Großenhain in around 2½ hours. The closest long-distance train station is Dresden-Neustadt.

Grossenhain belongs to the tariff area of Verkehrsverbunds Oberelbe (VVO), whose tickets are valid on all regional trains and buses, regardless of the operating transport company.

By bus

The regional bus route 409 of the VG Meissen There is a “Plusbus” line between Meißen and Grossenhain, i. H. it runs every hour on weekdays (until around 8 p.m.) and every two hours on weekends (until around 7 p.m.).

In the street

Grossenhain is not far from the A 13 Berlin – Dresden, where you can exit from both directions Symbol: AS 20 Thiendorf leaves and changes to the B 98. Grossenhain is located on the 105 km long Röderradroute (Rammenau at BischofswerdaRadebergRadeburg–Großenhain – Kosilenzien Bad Liebenwerda). It is 21 km from Radeburg, 46 km from Radeberg, 65 km from Rammenau, 38 km from Kosilenzien, 47 km from Bad Liebenwerda.

Connection to the Elbe cycle path exists about 10 km west of Großenhain near Merschwitz (between Seusslitz and Nünchritz).

On foot

The leads through Großenhain Ecumenical pilgrimage in Central Germany along the medieval trade route Via Regia (Görlitz – Bautzen – Großenhain – Leipzig – Erfurt), a branch of the international Way of St. James. The next stages are Kamenz or Königsbrück in the east as well Strehla or Dahlen in a westerly direction.

The Meißen transport company (VGM) offers a bus route in Grossenhain - Line A - which runs from Großraschütz via Kleinraschütz, the city center (Cottbuser Bahnhof, Mozartallee, Franz-Schubert-Allee, Hohe Straße) and Frauenmarkt to the Kupferberg. The buses run every hour on weekdays (until around 6.30 p.m.). At the weekend, the line is only served between Cottbuser Bhf and Kupferberg and only every two hours (until around 5.15 p.m.).

Other districts and neighboring communities can be reached by regional bus lines, for example line 461, which connects the city center with Zabeltitz and Gröditz every hour on weekdays (until around 7 p.m.; does not run on weekends).

Most of the sights are located in the historic city center, which is only 600 meters in diameter. Everything is within walking distance.

You can also take the train between Großenhain Cottbuser Bf and Zabeltitz (RB every two hours), the journey takes 6 minutes. The Zabeltitz train station is 1.5 km from the baroque palace.
