history

From Louis XIII. Built in 1631 and expanded by Louis XIV the "Sun King" to erect a monument to demonstrate his power and glory. Originally used as a hunting lodge, the young Ludwig began to design the palace in 1661 to match his status. In 1682 Ludwig moved his court and government to Versailles. The north and south wings as well as the orangery were added. In 1789, the French people forced the royal family to return to Paris.

Versailles wrote international history, the German Kaiser Wilhelm I proclaimed the German Empire in 1871. At the end of World War I, the peace treaty was signed here.

In the turmoil of the French Revolution, Versailles was mercilessly plundered and many art treasures were auctioned, disappeared or were destroyed.

Hall of Mirrors - Galerie des Glaces

Hall of Mirrors
Line of sight into the garden

The most famous of all the halls in the palace stretches over 75 m long and is 10 m wide. The light falls through 17 large windows onto 17 equal-sized mirrors. They give the room an indescribable shine. 32 silver chandeliers and wall sconces illuminate the hall, the light of which is refracted a thousand times in the windows and mirrors. Louis XIV's first 17 years of his reign are glorified on the ceiling. In the gallery, which actually served as a passage room between the king and queen's apartments, only extraordinary celebrations took place.

The hall made history in 1871 by the German Chancellor Bismarck, who proclaimed the Prussian King Emperor of Germany. On June 28, 1919, the First World War officially ended here with the peace treaty with Germany.

Today the hall of mirrors has been restored as it appeared in 1770 at the wedding of Louis XVI to Marie-Antoinette. The restoration of the hall of mirrors was completed in 2007.

From the middle windows you have a wonderful view of the spacious garden.
