Paris-Orly Airport

The Paris-Orly Airport (international: Paris - Orly Airport, French: Aéroport Paris-Orly) is one of the international Paris airports and is 14 km south of Paris on land belonging to seven municipalities, including Orly and Villeneuve-le-Roi.

background

The airport began with an airfield and several maintenance hangars up to 300 m long, which were built in the 1920s. During the Second World War, the airport was occupied by the German Air Force, and civil flight operations began again in 1946.

The airport tower dates back to the 1960s.

For example, most domestic French flights take off and land on Orly, Air France also serves the French overseas territories and low-cost airlines also land here. The airport is now a little smaller than Paris Charles de Gaulle as the second largest passenger airport in Europe, but still number 2 among the French airports.

Terminals

The airport has two terminals in operation:

Terminal Sud

The southern terminal, which opened in 1961, is the older of the two terminals. Because of its airy steel / glass architecture, it is also known as the “Vitrine de la France” (French shop window). Besides Air France, the main users are Air Malta, easyJet, El Al, Swiss and Turkish Airlines.

Since 1961, the Sud Terminal has been expanded to include two satellites and the check-in area; today it is around 700 m long and extends over eight floors. In the upper, quite quiet levels there is a small gallery, a small shopping center and several restaurants of all classes.

Terminal Ouest

Terminal Ouest (West), "Hall Central"

The western terminal is the newer one and also has the slightly better infrastructure. The architecturally simpler but functional building was opened in 1971 and has been expanded several times since then; the terminal is primarily used by Air France, Iberia and TAP Portugal.

Functionally, it is divided into an approach area on the ground floor and a departure area on the floor above. It consists of four halls No. 1 - 4 and a central "Hall Central", with Hall two being used exclusively by Air France for national flights, while the often overcrowded Hall three is used for charter flights. Hall one and four are smaller.
