background

The municipality with municipal rights is free of charge and is located about 60 kilometers north of Dresden in the Elbe-Elster district in southern Brandenburg. The district of Kraupa, a formerly independent municipality, belongs to the 41 km² urban area. The urban area also includes the districts of Biehla and Krauschütz, which were incorporated in 1940, as well as Kotschka (since 1974), Mitte and West.

Located on the western border of the Schraden lowland area, the Pulsnitz flows into the Black Elster in the urban area. The Elsterwerda-Grödel raft canal, built in the 18th century, connects the two rivers to the Elbe and was an economically important transport route until the end of the 19th century, when the Elsterwerda-Riesa railway line ran almost parallel to one another.

Elsterwerda was first mentioned in a document on March 14, 1211. The place has had town charter since 1364. The center in the area around the town hall, St. Catherine's Church and the market still shows the character of a former agricultural town, because the most important economic factor was previously agriculture. The construction of the railway lines crossing here in the second half of the 19th century favored the Industrialization and the city developed into a regionally important industrial location with numerous companies. The population more than doubled within a few decades and reached its historic high of around 11,500 in the 1980s. At the present time Elsterwerda still has around 8,500 inhabitants.

Administratively, the place originally belonged to the Electoral Saxon office of Hayn (today Grossenhain). After the division of Saxony in 1815, Elsterwerda became part of the Prussian district of Liebenwerda in accordance with the provisions of the Congress of Vienna. After the district reform in Brandenburg, Elsterwerda came to the newly formed district of Elbe-Elster in 1993.

Since 1995, Elsterwerda and Bad Liebenwerda have been performing the function of a medium-sized center in addition to their functions. Your largest branch of industry is the metal industry. The city traditionally enjoys a good reputation as a school city due to its wide range of educational opportunities.

Tourist Attractions

Saxon post mile column and St. Katharina's Church
Magpie Castle

In the historic city center there are not only shops but also some sights. You can start a short tour from the monument square, where there are easy parking spaces. You just follow the main road that begins here for a few hundred meters. Right at the beginning you reach the Small gallery "Hans Nadler" The Eulenspiegel fountain from 1980 can be seen in front of the building. The historic half-timbered house from the 18th century houses a permanent exhibition on the Elsterwerda-born Schradenmaler Hans Nadler on the upper floor. In the lower rooms, regional artists present their works in alternating succession.

A little later you get to the Marketplace. The city owes its large, modern, rectangular square to a major fire shortly after the Second World War. Back then, an entire block of residential and commercial buildings fell victim to an arson attack. Originally, the market only included the area east of the Elsterbrunnen and was thus about half the size. In the early 1950s, the city administration had the adjacent rubble field removed and a green area built instead. Its optical center later became the Elsterbrunnen created by Hans Eickworth. The square got its current shape and size after another redesign a few years ago. Most of the green space was replaced by concrete slabs and the group of figures from the Elsterbrunnen moved to the center. There have been several design ideas in the past for a small triangular area called the southern tip, which remains after the redevelopment measures. However, none of them has prevailed so far. Until recently, on the opposite side of the street, in place of an unattractive vacant lot that characterizes the cityscape, the listed building of the former Selkmann bakery was located. Their ruin, marked by decay, was finally torn down in 2012 after years of quarrels.

A few meters further on, you will soon come to other historic buildings. The one on the right Elsterwerda town hall. This building was mentioned as an inn and post office as early as 1711 in the Elsterwerda city register. It has been used as the town hall since 1879. It was given its present form after extensive construction work in 1912. The one not far away St. Catherine Church is one of the oldest buildings in the city. The baroque hall church originated from a medieval brick building. Inside is Leipzig Green the determining shade. The vestibule is characterized by a scraffito painting by Hans Nadler. Twelve historical epitaphs can be seen on the inner walls of the church. The font dates from the 16th century, the organ from 1887.

The church is adjoined by a small square, around which other historical buildings such as the former city pharmacy and the former Runge bookstore are lined up. In the middle there is one Post mileage pillar from the year 1738. Its original location was at the former Lucki Gate at the north end of the main street. It was created as one of the last of these historical path markings in the then Kursachsen and was moved to its current location by Mayor Albert Wilde during the period in office from 1882 to 1919. The coat of arms of the monument, which was last restored in 1999, shows both the Electoral Saxon and the Polish-Lithuanian coat of arms.

The end of the main street is marked by the bridge over the Black Elster, which has been renewed in recent years. From here you have a wonderful view of the most important building in the city, the Magpie Castle. This is a hunting lodge built in the 18th century, which is located on the site of a castle that was probably built in the 13th century. The Oberhofmarschall Woldemar Freiherr von Löwendal, who was in the service of the Saxon Elector and a grandson of the Danish King Friedrich III, acquired it in 1708 shortly after he settled in Electoral Saxony. He had the castle converted into a three-wing complex. After he got into financial difficulties, however, he had to sell it to the Saxon Elector August the Strong in 1727, who in turn gave it to his daughter-in-law Maria Josepha of Austria, under whom the castle was given its present form. After the castle has served as a teaching institution since 1857, the Elsterschlossgymnasium is currently located in its rooms, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful schools in Germany.

About one kilometer east of the center is located in the immediate vicinity of the industrial area-Ost der Adventure and miniature park with one that is visible from afar Post mill from 1804, whose original location was west of the train station. The 30,000 m² area offers true-to-scale miniatures of sights in the region, a rosarium with around 500 different types of roses, an LGB garden railway system, a 680 m long park railway with 7¼ inch gauge, a mini Lausitzring with a 170 m long racing track for model cars and a Adventure knight castle.
