Bischofswerda is a city in Upper Lusatia. It is also called the gateway to Upper Lusatia.
background
Settled by the Sorbs around 600, the place was expanded into a town by the bishops of Meissen, especially Bishop Benno Graf von Waldenburg, and a church was built between 970 and 1076. The city was first mentioned in a document in 1227, and Bischofswerda has been officially called the city since 1361. The foundation of today's Bischofswerda is the reconstruction and redesign of the city after the great fire of May 12, 1813. Probably the result of the negligence of Napoleonic troops, only three houses and part of the Fronfeste remained within the curtain wall. The medieval town center with the town hall built in the classical style in 1818, the Paradiesbrunnen and the town houses on the historic old market, which was completely redesigned in 2006 and 2007, is the town’s central market square
