The former six-city Kamenz (Sorbian Kamjenc) is located on a plateau above the Black Elster in the west Upper Lusatia. It is the birthplace of the poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781). The old town is characterized by its medieval floor plan and the dense development.

background

Around 1190, a castle was built on the Schlossberg on the site of today's old town. This should be the Via Regia, one of the most important medieval trade routes, at the crossing through the Black Elster. It promotes the rapid growth of the city. Kamenz was first mentioned as a town in 1225.

In 1318, Margrave Waldemar von Brandenburg bought Kamenz, whereupon it became a sovereign, free city. In the following year, Kamenz fell to the King of Bohemia.

In 1346 Kamenz is a founding member of the Upper Lusatian six-city alliance. The associated privileges and the location on Via Regia help the city to flourish in the Middle Ages. In 1429 the Hussites conquered the city and completely destroyed it. In 1432 the now dilapidated castle, which had turned out to be a weak point in the city fortifications during the defense against the Hussites, was demolished.

In 1547 Kamenz lost almost all privileges with the Pönfall of the Six Cities League. After that, the city never managed to find its way back to its former size.

Kamenz comes to Saxony in 1635. As a result of the fires in 1706 and 1842, the city was almost completely reduced to rubble.

By train

If you want to travel by train, use the hourly regional train line from Dresden. The connections from Bischofswerda and Senftenberg, however, were discontinued. The 1 Kamenz train stationKamenz station in the Wikipedia encyclopediaKamenz station in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsKamenz station (Q15641094) in the Wikidata database is located north of the center and can be easily reached on foot from there.

By bus

Although none of the large long-distance bus companies operate Kamenz, there is a regular, scheduled bus connection between Kamenz and Bautzen and a good connection (at least during the week) to Hoyerswerda and Bischhofswerda with the regional bus.

In the street

The driver drives from Dresden on the A4 to the exit Symbol: AS 85 Pulsnitz and then over the city Pulsnitz; from the direction of Görlitz via the A4 to the exit Symbol: AS 88a Uhyst, then to Siebitz and turn left onto Bautzen-Kamenzer Landstrasse; from the direction of Berlin on the A 13 to the exit Symbol: AS 16 Schwarzheide, then towards Bernsdorf and right before Grünewald. Direct federal roads do not lead to Kamenz.

By plane

Kamenz does have a commercial airport (one of the oldest in Germany), but it is not used by scheduled flights. The nearest commercial airport is Dresden (IATA code: DRS; 50 km, approx. 50 min by train)

Tourist Attractions

Kamenz is characterized on the one hand by the closed development around the market square and on the other hand by the many parks and gardens that make Kamenz the “green city” of Upper Lusatia. Above all the Hutberg complex with its rhododendrons, azaleas and other trees.

trips

St. Marienstern Monastery

Kamenz is a suitable starting point for hikes and bike tours in the West Lusatian hills and mountains and in the Königsbrücker Heide. Further goals are listed below.

  • Pulsnitz (11 km south) - the Saxon gingerbread town on the western edge of Upper Lusatia.
  • Koenigsbrück (15 km to the west) - small town on the western edge of Upper Lusatia; Königsbrück has a Via Regia model exhibition and is the ideal starting point for excursions to the Königsbrücker Heide nature reserve. A visitor center organizes guided tours.
  • Neschwitz (19 km east) - small town between Bautzen and Hoyerswerda; Neschwitz Castle and Park.
  • Bischofswerda (20 km south) - city on the Wesenitz; "Pushing days".
  • Hoyerswerda (24 km to the northeast) - at first glance, Hoyerswerda, the “second socialist city of the GDR”, stands for rather monotonous architecture, but there is also an old Hoyerswerda and the Lusatian Lake District in the vicinity.
  • Bautzen (27 km southeast) - the "Saxon Nuremberg" with a very charming old town; Capital of the Sorbs.
  • St. Marienstern Monastery (9 km southeast) - Cistercian abbey, existing since 1248.
  • Baroque castle Rammenau (19 km south) - Baroque palace with museum and park.
