Hoyerswerda (Upper Sorbian: Wojerecy) is a city on the Black Elster in the Upper Lusatia with an interesting population trend.

background

Before the war it only had 7,000 inhabitants. After the Black Pump lignite refining plant was built near the city, the need for living space grew so strongly that a completely new residential area was built using prefabricated panels. As a result, Hoyerswerda is divided into an old town and a new town. In 1981, 71,000 people lived here. After the fall of the Wall, the city experienced a unique decline in population compared to other cities of its size due to emigration and aging. In 2007 - despite incorporation - only 41,000 people lived here; for 2020 the forecasts assume 27,000.
